iTunes Review

There was a time when no one figured we’d ever hear from Brian Wilson again. And if we did, it wouldn’t be with the kind of self-reflection one hears throughout his 2008 release That Lucky Old Sun where he admits, “I laid around this old place / I hardly ever washed my face” and “At 25, I turned out the light / ‘Cause I couldn’t handle the glare in my tired eyes.” Sun is a loose concept album based on Wilson’s evergreen Beach Boy summer vision and the things that went wrong. Just as the title track, a hit for Frankie Laine, reflects a wish for an innocent world and the sort of California Dreaming that Wilson mined throughout his greatest era, so do the innocent vocalizings of “Forever She’ll Be My Surfer Girl,” “Midnight’s Another Day,” and the closing piano ballad “Southern California.” A set of narratives written by Wilson, Scott Bennett and old collaborator Van Dyke Parks are intended to pull the concept together but they’re just quick interjections that neither add nor subtract from Wilson’s musical exuberance. The production is clean and up to date, without any unnecessary novelties clouding the ensemble vocals and arrangements that would have fit comfortably on any post-Pet Sounds collection.

This is the Brian Wilson I Remember

That Lucky Old Sun not only touches on the magic of LA, it also touches on the genius that Brian Wilson is. This work reminds me of Brian's mid to late 60's work that always amazed me and left me hungry for more. A perfect example is the very short, little version of That Lucky Old Sun at the end of the album. (Can we get a completed version Brian?) Though their 30 second snippets don't do them justice, to me, the bonus songs alone are worth the price of this album.

Thanks Brian for never giving up on yourself or the talent/gift you were blessed with. Thanks to your great band too. They do an excellent job at producing your sound. Man, I hope to see you, in Heaven and in charge of the music some day.

Brian's Best New Music in Decades

This is a fantastic collection of new songs from Brian Wilson, complete with his own signature California sound! I’ve been listening to Brian’s music for decades and he has never sounded better. “Midnight’s Another Day” is simply amazing. If you loved SMiLE, you won't be disappointed. This album is THAT good. Congrats Brian!

Another Masterpiece

I thought Smile was a one-shot deal for Wilson, but he's surprised me that he still has more music in him. There's no doubt that the songs that make up That Lucky Old Sun were taken right out of the pages of Brian Wilson's life. Wilson delivers ten short tales of his life on the West Coast set to some of the catchiest, emotional, and fun musical backgrounds. Even the narratives that connect one story to the next are interesting. Wilson has another masterpiece on his hands with That Lucky Old Sun, and we are all lucky to be able experience new and fresh music from a musical legend.

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Brian Wilson is arguably the greatest American composer of popular music in the rock era. Born and raised in Hawthorne, CA, Wilson formed the Beach Boys — with his two younger brothers, cousin Mike Love, and school friend Alan Jardine — and they became the most successful American rock band in history by performing his songs, which initially combined the rock urgency of Chuck Berry with the harmonies of the Four Freshmen. Wilson's musical imagination expanded during the '60s to the point...
