iTunes Review

“Survivor” is one of pop music’s most overworked phrases. Andrew McMahon, though, has earned the title by resuming his recording career after a harrowing battle with leukemia. As the guiding force behind Jack’s Mannequin, he turns 2008’s The Glass Passenger into an emotionally-wrenching and ultimately transcendent release. The Glass Passenger documents his struggle to regain his health, with “What Gets You Off,” “The Resolution,” and the eight minutes-plus “Caves” offering diary-like details of his recent ordeal. The heavy mood of the album is lightened by flashes of McMahon’s mastery of ‘80s pop forms — “Spinning,” “American Love,” and “Orphans” sparkle and chime to buoyant New Wavy melodies. Rather than wallowing in private suffering, the singer reaches out to fans in the panoramic “Hammer and Strings (A Lullaby).” “Swim” may be the album’s spiritual center, an expression of dogged resolve in the face of dark forces. McMahon’s bruised vocals and simple yet effective piano work show enough edge to make these confessions cut deep. The Glass Passenger is a high-potency, fine-crafted pop/rock effort as well as a personal document of hard-won survival.

Worth A Second Listen--Won't Disappoint

I've been a SoCo/Jack's Mannequin fan for years and was so excited for this album. The first time through, I hated it and was ready to write it off. It's not as instantly catchy and upbeat as Everything In Transit, and that's because it is so much more. This album literally gets better with every listen as you can hear Andrew's development as a songwriter and understand the privilege to be led on this incredible journey he's had over the past four years. The songs are more subtly nuanced with a lot more depth and complexity to offer on careful and repeated listens. I recommend this album to anyone of any taste who will listen. It's a story of survival and perseverance and hope--I dare you not to be moved.

While you're at it, check out the 'Dear Jack' documentary available on iTunes for 9.99 with all proceeds benefiting Andrew's 'Dear Jack Foundation.' It's a very unique glimpse at the power of human nature at its most vulnerable, and we should all be honored he's decided to share it with us.

For all the people who say he's not the same on this album....

Its' cause he battled cancer and survived. Give the dude some slack for not having the album out in three years...mutated cells don't have calendars or watches. Major props to the new produced, loud and soaring sounds. Some lyrics lack the deep personal cuts of his past but renew with a broader, heartfelt feeling emerging. His voice is different but i stil hear the Andrew underneath.

ANDREW IS MY HERO !
