Amazing As Always...

I am always skeptical when a settled-in band releases new music, because so many artists end up caring more about the dollar than the art. Obviously, this is not the case. These two songs are both fresh and timeless.

Singles worth marrying

The start of the "Always the Bridesmaid" series is a strong work of art that showcases just how clever the Decemberists are. "Valerie Plame" is a jangly tune that merges indie pop with ragtime syncopation and instrumentation. At the surface level, you can enjoy a Decemberists tune for its melody and arrangements. Though the band has made it a mission to "entertain, educate and edify" its audience. Those unfamiliar with Valerie Plame (the C.I.A. operative) should do an internet search and learn more of Colin Meloy's muse.

"O New England" coasts on a progression similar to The Promise Ring's "New Jersey Shore" with some fantastic turn of phrase and vivid imagery. Chris Funk's tastefully placed lead guitar splashes and the slightly distorted backing vocals (which sound like Ben Gibbard lends his voice) really add to making "O New England" a dynamic jaunt of a song. Its a song that longs to be played through a car stereo on an autumn roadtrip.

Thank you, Decemberists!

The band's initial lineup also included drummer Ezra Holbrook, bassist Nate Query, keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk. Frontman Meloy had previously devoted some time to an alternative country...
