iTunes Review

Culled from a pair of 2007 EPs, Limbs and Branches offers the essence of Jon Foreman’s recent solo explorations. These lo-fi recordings are small gems of longing and insight, deceptively understated in approach. Foreman forsakes the driving pop-rock of his band Switchfoot in favor of acoustic guitar-centered tracks colored by sad trumpets and moody strings. The songs are informed by his Christian faith, if not always explicitly spiritual in content. Issues of mortality are very much on his mind, reflected in disquieting tunes like “Learning How to Die” and the newly-recorded “Broken from the Start.” His love songs — especially “Behind Your Eyes” and “A Mirror is Harder to Hold” — match subtle, conflicted lyrics to lilting melodies. There are tough-minded moments here, with “Instead of a Show” (a scathing commentary on Christian hypocrisy) and “Resurrect Me” (a ferocious self-indictment) making the strongest impression. Framing the album is the luminous folk/pop hymn “Your Love Is Strong” and the dark yet hopeful “Over the River.” Throughout, Foreman seems to be unburdening himself, using the recording process as an act of confession. Limbs and Branches is a cogent introduction to Foreman’s private musings, sometimes unsettling but deeply rewarding.

Limbs & Branches - Song Review

Jon Foreman is a master at song writing - a nearly un-matched talent. This CD is pure perfection; an eclectic mix of tunes and emotions, a poignant journey, a beautiful story.
I’ve already reviewed Jon’s 4 other EP offerings and the songs included in those (most of which are featured on this CD, as this is essentially a “Fan’s Favorites” album), so this review is going to focus on the two new tunes, Broken From the Start and Over The River.

BROKEN FROM THE START
When I heard the first strains of this song coming from my speakers, my mouth dropped. The beginning is so hauntingly beautiful. This is probably one of the darker songs that we've heard from Jon, with gripping lyrics that dig into your soul. "Tonight honey, I'm going to break your heart, mine was broken from the start," Jon sings, his voice full of emotion. The piano in this song is GORGEOUS. This is one of those songs that makes you feel something... be that loss, pain, sorrow, tears... whatever. This song will awake all kinds of emotions in you. I feel like this song is trying to rip your heart in two.
And it's an incredible experience. I love a song that takes you somewhere.

OVER THE RIVER
I think my favorite part of this is the beginning. The way he starts this song... it's brilliant. I don't want to ruin it by telling you what he does, but trust me, it's grabs your attention immediately. Lyrically, this is a sweeping song, full of imagery and imagination. I caught a couple Bible verses in the song, such as "death where is your sting?" Personally, I think this song is about death and heaven... but if it is, Jon writes about it in typical Foreman form; ambiguous and thought-provoking. Vocally, I feel like he stretches himself a bit more... and it's a stretch that pays off. His vocals are fragile and soft, a perfect fitting ending to the song... but wait! Has the song REALLY ended?

In conclusion, this CD is worth the money just for the two new songs alone, but if you have yet to hear any of Jon’s tunes, I highly recommend checking out all the songs on here. This CD features some of Jon’s best work, from the brilliant Cure for Pain, to the soft In My Arms, to the magnificent Learning How to Die. I can pretty much guarantee you won’t want your money back.

Bravo Jon on another mind-blowing release.

"The easiest thing to do is throw a rock. It's a lot harder to create a stained glass window. I used to get upset at the people who threw rocks but now I'd rather spend my time building the stained glass windows." - jon foreman

It's often hard to see past ourselves and be open to the beauty and truth of this life. Jon Foreman has been used as a part of a story far bigger than his own or mine or yours. His songs have helped me, and many others, come to find that there is more to this life than what we take at face value.
And at the end of the day, he does it for the right reasons: "...I don't want to fly anyone's flag other than Christ's."

Buy this album if you're new to Jon Foreman!

This is a great compilation, and features some of the best tracks by Jon Foreman, the singer from Switchfoot. If you want to hear a more complete interpretation of his work, sorted by season, buy the other 4 EP's. They are worth every penny.

For those who already got the 4 ep's, the two new song "Broken From the Start" and "Over the River" are still worth two bucks. Great great album from a great great songwriter!
