Album Review

There's something mildly perverse about the notion of an American band striving to look and sound French, since rock & roll is something that comes easily to lots of folks in the States but is an all but insurmountable stylistic challenge in the Land of Gaul. Maybe it's a cliché, but who can name five great French rock bands? (And no, Plastic Bertrand doesn't count, he was from Belgium.) There's no question that the French are great with wine, cheese, movies, literature, and short-lived political uprisings (May 1968! That was a good one!), but they play pop, not rock & roll, and the difference is telling. Nous Non Plus are a band from New York who sing in a jumbled mixture of anglais and francais, sport stage names like Celine Dijon and Jean-Luc Retard and worship at the altar of Serge Gainsbourg, but one listen to their second album, Menagerie, gives the game away — this band plays with far too much rhythmic confidence to be an ordinary French pop act, even if they weren't dropping subtle jokes throughout their songs, and much of the time Cal d'Hommage's guitar work is too dirty and high in the mix for anyone short of Little Bob Story. More to the point, Nous Non Plus are weighed down with a burden common to many bands built around a comic schtick — their gimmick is elaborate enough that it tends to get in the way of the music, and they seem to have a hard time juggling the demands of their assumed Francophile personalities and playing music that fits the persona. There are moments where Nous Non Plus create lovely approximations of classic French pop, such as "Sunlight Yellow Noise" and the witty "Le Dandy," and "Bollinger" could pass for some Parisian version of Combustible Edison. But the disco moves of "French Teacher," the caffeinated new wave pulse of "Loli," and the moody MOR of "Toi et Moi" just don't fit the script, even when they work, and too much of this album sounds like the band is trying to bend their tunes to fit their stage act rather than letting them naturally inform one another, and the pretensions bog down an album that could and should be frothy fun. It's enough to make a guy wish Johnny Hallyday had never invented rock & roll in the first place.

Magnifique! NN+ does it again

It's been 4 years since talented New York-based Nous Non Plus' sparkling debut album. Now comes this joyous, meticulously-crafted follow-up, "Menagerie," and damn, I guess I have a new favorite album to which I can't sing along. Nous Non Plus manages to meld retro french pop, '80's synth rock ala the B-52's, a host of other styles from New Wave to Bosa Nova, and a playful sense of satire into something uniquely their own. Assuming you're not one of those people who orders "American fries" and can deal with French lyrics, this delightful 13-song confection is well worth your time. The first single, "Loli," demonstrates that NN+ can sound inspired by someone (Elvis Costello?) without sounding derivitive. "Loli" and its accompanying video is loads of fun and maddeningly catchy, like the similarly-upbeat pop of "Catastrophe." The irritating tongue-in-cheek disco tune "French Teacher," and the mediocre "Mais mainenant il faut danser" are the weakest tunes on the album, perhaps showing NN+ is at its best when it's not going for cheap laughs. But the rest of this album absolutely soars. "Fantome dur" shows off the groups haunting harmonies, and the terrific "Thief Like Me," ventures into artsy territory with fine results. "Claque Claque!" is too short here, but sounds like it would be a great rocker in concert. "La momie" is weird and fun, and "Sunlight Yellow Noise," sung in both French and English, is beautifully written. "Les damnes" and "Toi et moi" are both excellent songs as well as showcases for the ladies' vocal talents. "Menagerie" ends on a refreshing, jazzy groove. The sexy "Le dandy" flows nicely into the gorgeous bosa nova of "Bollinger," which fittingly closes the album with the ladies doing some lush harmonies that are so pretty they send a chill down my spine. NN+ shows once again they have formidable range. The playing and vocals are better than on the debut, and these songs have staying power. The group still opts for synth solos over guitar breaks in their rock songs, which some listeners may not care for. But there's some crunch in the chords, and the bass seems more out front in the mix than the first album. The drum work here is intricate and inspired. Oh, and those harmonies - they are simply things of wonder. NN+ might be a New York act, but "Menagerie" is like a cool, welcome Mediterranean breeze, blowing through the stagnant air of the modern pop scene. I find myself wishing this album wouldn't end. Very highly recommended.
