Brutha-Brutha
A quintet of brothers that have become known as Def Jam’s “next big thing” deliver their self-titled debut of R&B boy band music. With their reality show Brothers To Brutha, the group of Grady, Jared, Anthony, Papa & Jacob combine their soulful sounds in time for Christmas.
Bang Bang: The string accompaniment of plucking and light drum programming introduces the crew, as Anthony mainly handles the singing. The rest of the group backs with their harmonizing as the boys sing about a girl shooting them down. While the hook lacks, the vocals are on point, despite some mediocre lyrics. 3/5
I Can’t Hear The Music: Elvis “BlacElvis” Williams produces the boy’s first single, as electronic pianos and synths create a solid dance number. Anthony continues to mainly hold the leads with his brothers contributing to the chorus and bridge. Vocally they harmonize really well, however it at times gets lost in the production. Labelmate Fabolous drops a solid verse to begin the song. 3.5/5
She’s Gone: The true hit on the album as the background piano production serves the track well, allowing the boys to show their vocal talents and harmonizing. Anthony isn’t the only one on lead vocals, which is also another plus, showing their versatility as a group. The hook really makes the track and the catchy “I said oooooOOOoooo”. 4/5
Set It Off: Piano keys and guitars set the tone for this light midtempo, as the boys sing about making love and giving their girl the business. The playful lyrics that one of the boys sings is definitely what makes the track work, as the production is a bit dull, along with the melodies. 3/5
Like This: Mediocre production and lyricism make this track merely decent. While the vocals are on point, the lyrics are cliché and topic of “nobody doin’ it like this” are a bit tiresome. The bridge makes things a bit better, but the braggadocio of the crew makes this one only average. 2.5/5
Afraid Of Love: “BlacElvis” produces this one as well, with piano keys and better drum programming. What hinders this one, is an annoying sound in the production of an echoing sound that constantly is ingrained. Otherwise the hook isn’t bad and the lyrics are decent as well. 3/5
Ghost: Lush keyboards and twinkling bells play behind the repetitive hook of “ghost”. The boys are haunted by the hurt of a past girlfriend and the track is another decent track. 3/5
What If: Clap laden production and synth jabs back the boys on this calm midtempo. The hook is decent and the boys question if a relationship worked out, what would have happened. 3.5/5
Just Being Honest: Decent hook that follows the same formula of a few of the previous songs, as Anthony once again takes lead vocals and backed by his brothers. The hook is a bit repetitive and has similar harmonizing from other tracks. Decent. 3/5
Make You Love It: Jazze Pha production here is a bit lackluster, surprisingly. Snares and a mundane melody is just really boring, as bass bumps, but the boys voices just don’t seem to sound as good here. 2/5
Brutha’s debut isn’t bad, but its sad that it doesn’t quite fulfill the expectations I had of them. Having followed their a cappella movement, the group definitely has some great talent, they just don’t execute it very well and end up sounding like the rest of the R&B boy bands with little variation. Lead single “I Can’t Hear The Music” is a solid dance number with Fab but doesn’t really show their vocals, its dance mindset makes it forgivable, but other times it doesn’t. “Like This” features some cliché lyricism, despite some solid singing, while “Make You Love It” has some poor production from Jazze and ends up being the dud on the album. Overall the album feels rushed, the impressive a cappella that they performed is no where to be found here, and the Anthony mainly takes the leads, which is fine, but one might want to hear the other brothers, because all are vocally talented enough to handle some verses. The album starts off all right, but sadly falls off in the second half into mediocre midtempos that feature decent production solid singing but cliché songwriting. I look forward to their next release because they do have skill, its just not expressed very well here.

i'm loving this album so far...i'm finally glad a group has come along with built in chemistry & the ability to actually sing as one..
Its Good and thats it
I love their show on BET, which made me excited about their cd, but it wasn't what I expected. She's Gone is the best song on there. Its a good cd, but not GREAT.
