iTunes Review

Whether with his band the New Pornographers or here on his second solo album, 2009's Get Guilty, Carl Newman brings his particular psychedelic slant on power pop to the fore. The arrangements reveal an intrigue that spans from the smooth, graceful harmonies of the Beach Boys to the trippy, ornamental touches of the Flaming Lips all grounded in a post-punk velocity that never falters. The grumbling guitar strums underneath "The Heartbreak Rides" perfectly counterbalance the L.A. sunshine suggested by Newman's aching, pure vocal. A kaleidoscope of sound follows Newman down each avenue, so tunes such as "The Palace at 4 AM," "Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer," and "Submarines of Stockholm" shimmer with layers of guitar, keyboards, backing vocals and random sound washes, all wrapped into a tight, concise package. While Newman has proved extremely prolific, he's also shown a strong attention to quality control. There are no throwaways, no tossed-off asides. Every song is given the full treatment, with strong melodies given their room to flourish.

Missing Bass

by David Zicarelli

The songwriting is very good and the arrangements are interesting, but there just isn't any low end. Even turning up the bass on the stereo doesn't really help. I have to think it's intentional, trying to create a "we're just sitting around the fire strumming our guitars" atmosphere, or maybe people who are into this kind of music only listen to it on laptop speakers so they don't notice? Maybe Mr. Newman has been scared by too many unpleasant encounters with subwoofers? It's a mystery.

AC Newman - Get Guilty

by Kim Bergenser

Great fan of the New Ponographers - saw in Mar.09 at Cats Cradle for the first time A.C.Newman and his exciting band incl Chapel Hills own Jon Wurzer (ex SuperChunck) whose incridble drumming added another layer to the music. Somehow the live sound was even better than the album sound - but I love his singing - and his band are great musicians and fun to watch on stage - so I am really happy to listen to Get Guilty and all A.C. Newman's great tunes and arrangements. They say NP and AC create POP music, but they are on a totally different level than most band in this genre. Buy it you like fingersnapping - footstomping music.

Great album but waiting for iTunes Plus version

by John Z

As much as I like The New Pornographers (I have all their discography) and A.C. Newman, as well, I'm holding off purchasing this album until the iTunes Plus version is available. No more DRM for me, and I'm not going to dish out another $3.00 for the upgrade. In another couple of months, everything at iTunes will be DRM-free. Better hurry Apple or I'll buy it someplace else, but I want the bonus track, available only at iTunes. I hate exclusive deals!
