iTunes Review

Since 2000, Animal Collective has combined far-flung elements — Beach Boys-influenced vocals, ambient textures, bursts of noise, folky singalongs, psychedelic explorations — into a unique sound that is both experimental and melody loving. Merriweather Post Pavilion, their ninth full-length, is a breakthrough. The group — Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Brian Weitz (Geologist) — have created their poppiest work yet, and it sounds great. In the mid-‘80s, Sonic Youth started to shape their overtone-filled textures into potent songs, and on Merriweather, Animal Collective pulls off a similar coup. The desire for familial domesticity never sounded as ecstatic as it does on “My Girls.” (And who knew a line like “I just want four walls and adobe slats for my girls” could be so catchy?) “Also Frightened” evokes ‘60s psych filtered through the band’s 21st-century sensibility, while “Bluish” is a mellow slice of phase-shifted bliss etched with details that play off the lead vocal in winsome ways. On the closer, “Brother Sport,” the group layers vocals and percussion with delirious glee: it’s a great send-off for a joyful album.

Unlike anything you've ever heard in your life...

I'm a hardcore Radiohead fan...I also like Coldplay, Flaming Lips, and more recently, My Morning Jacket. All of these artists are capable of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard...but could you put Animal Collective in this list? Before this album, Merriweather, I don't know if you could...but wow once you give this one a few listens you will agree there are some breath-taking melodies...And these melodies don't take effect until midway through the first song "In The Flowers" and then BOOM there it is at the 2:30 mark WOW and it just builds and builds and if thats not enough then take the last minute of "My Girls" it is...well...unreal to say the least (like God created that minute of music) but also the "Are you also frigthened?" part of the third song and what can I say about Bluish, Lion In a Coma, and Brother Sport...these are all excellent songs that will grow and grow and KEEP GROWING on you every time you decide to listen to something unlike anything you will ever hear anywhere else...wow...

Yes I can see how some my think that this album is repetative noise, all that we hear in our life is just noise, most is repetative at that. What we hear is only maid sense by us, and us alone. So if you hear this album and can't make sense of it, than try something else. As I listen, taking in to account the numerous pop bands and groups, this is a breathe of fresh colourful air, streaming down my lungs, into my brainstem. Enjoy

More Pop music.

The newest trend in synth pop, take a generation or decade of music( In this case Beach Boys style 60's, in the case of other bands, which shall remain nameless, it's New Wave 80's style music), add some of todays psychedelic techno and you have todays pop music. Hardly "experimental" or innovative at all.
