iTunes Review

Old San Diego schoolmates Jon Foreman (of Switchfoot renown) and Sean Watkins (guitar hero from Nickel Creek) turn their first joint effort into more than a casual side project. Fiction Family allows these two gifted singer/songwriters to follow their more esoteric instincts and challenge their fans’ expectations. There are several gorgeous pop-rock tunes here, with the smile-inducing “When She’s Near” and the murky yet shimmering “Out of Order” taking top honors. Much of the album, though, is given over to more subdued introspective pieces. Tunes like “Throw It Away,” “Betrayal,” and “Mostly Prove Me Wrong” are melancholy folk numbers in the tradition of Bert Jansch and Iron & Wine. “Not Sure” kicks things into country-rock territory, while “Closer Than You Think” betrays a hint of modern bluegrass. Just when clouds of gloom seem to settle over the tracks, Foreman and Watkins offer a jolt of zaniness with “Look for Me Baby.” At its best, Fiction Family reflects a synergy between Jon and Sean’s contrasting but complimentary talents; these guys should get together more often.

Fiction Family - A Song by Song Review

When She’s Near – 5 of 5
From the first burst of sound to the final note, this song will hold your attention. The lyrics are relatable; the sound infectious.

Out of Order – 5 of 5
A song that fits its title! Foreman and Watkins trade off vocals with pleasing rhythm and ease. A variety of instruments pepper this track and it may take a couple of listens to fully comprehend the depth of the musical experimentation.

Not Sure – 5 of 5
Heart breaking and sincere, perfectly voicing the clashing feelings of lost love. “I’m not sure that I’ll get over you, I’m not sure that I want too,” Watkins sings plaintively. Foreman’s soft backing vocals only add to the melancholy mood.

Betrayal – 5 of 5
A murder mystery ballad with a surprising twist. With lyrics that roll off the tongue (“So I’m not dead if what you did don’t hurt”), this song draws on catchy phrases and wording that keep the song alive and interesting.
Another bonus? The fabulous horns near the end.

Elements Combined – 5 of 5
A beautiful ballad with impeccable lyrics. Again, Watkins shines at singing sweet, emotive ballads. “You are elements combined. Earth, air, fire, wine. Some day you’ll be mine, elements combined.”

War In My Blood – 5 of 5
A lyrical masterpiece. “I’ve got a girl, she tastes like rain on my tongue,” Foreman sings; his voice full of emotions and feelings. “She’s got the moon in her hips and her eyes burn up like the sun.”
Pure, simple, unadulterated genius.

Throw It Away – 5 of 5
Pensive. Contemplative. Meditative. The one song on the album that is not a Foreman/Watkins original, this cover of the Abbey Lincoln song is achingly emotive. Full of sweeping imagery, Foreman’s doleful voice brings a longing grief to the listener.
The musical cacophony at the end just underscores all that has been said with sharp precision.

Closer Than You Think – 4 ½ of 5
To be brutally honest, my first impression of this song was not positive. I found it a little trite. However, upon further listens and some analyzing of the lyrics, I’ve come to appreciate the depth of this song. It’s one of the most different takes on heaven that I’ve heard.

Please, Don’t Call It Love – 5 of 5
Sara Watkins shines at the violin at the beginning of this song, setting the mournful, heart rendering mood. Jon’s vocals are absolutely perfect in their tone, emotion and pitch. A beautiful song of love and pain.
I also love the dissonance, melodic crunch of sounds that assault the listener for the last minute of the song.

Mostly Prove Me Wrong – 5 of 5
Absolutely brilliant lyrics, magnificent in their subtle meanderings. “Tell me I’m no loner,” Foreman pleads in the chorus. “Tell me I’m not crazy, or maybe just a little bit, maybe just a little bit crazy. But mostly prove me wrong.”

We Ride – 5 of 5
This song is so completely voyeuristic, it creates an almost euphoric feeling. The song is textured with a mingling of chords and sounds, adding to the crashing sounds… it almost sounds like the ocean. Foreman once again nails the vocals with passion and fever.

Look For Me Baby – 5 of 5
A song that is guaranteed to get you out of your seat! Lively and maybe even a little spasmodic, this is a minute and a half of raw energy.

In conclusion? This album is one of the most innovative, creative releases that I've heard. Eclectic, subtle, intriguing. I can't get enough.

Both musicians rock! So how does a joint effort measure up?...

Both Switchfoot and Nickel Creek are great bands. the collaboration between Jon Foreman and Sean Watkins is something I hadn't expected, but they turned out some great jams and its above all a solid album. I recommend it to any fan of Nickel Creek or Switchfoot.

wow

Biography

Formed: Cardiff, CA

Genre: Adult Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Fiction Family is the acoustic-oriented collaboration of Switchfoot's Jon Foreman and Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins. The duo took informal shape in 2005 under the name the Real SeanJon, a humorous moniker intended to irk Sean Jean Combs. Utilizing what little time they had between tours, the musicians began creating homemade recordings of their collaborative songs. Progress was slow, however, as Watkins devoted significant time to Nickel Creek's "Farewell (For Now)" tour and Foreman busied himself...
