One Word: Amazingly Unique. Okay, two words.

by DJ Msta24

After I got "Detroit" when it was the free single, I bought this album on somewhat of an impulse. I listened to "Breakdown" and was, frankly, horrified. It was the most repetitive, boring song I had ever heard. Uh-oh. Just wasted my eight bucks. But when I listened to it in the car all the way through a few days later, I was proven wrong-twice over. Black Gold has what it takes to be very, very popular, and their music is full of awesome lyrics and a distinctive, soulful sound that is plain and simple AWESOME.
Let's take it song-by-song:

1.Detroit: Very good, almost Muse-esque. Free single that turned me onto them. 8/10

2. Planes & Reveries: Should be their next single, should get airtime on the radio. Better than Detroit. 9/10

3. Breakdown: Actually a lot better than my first impression, the piano "riffs" that drive the song are great. 7.5/10

4. What You Did: Freakin' awesome. 'Nuff said. 9/10

5. Silver: Pretty good. Less unique and more poppy than their other songs. 8/10

6. Shine: Again, very good, and also poppy, should get some airtime as well. 8/10

7. Idols: For some reason or another, I am addicted to this song. Great chorus that gets stuck in your head and won't leave until you listen to it. 9/10

8. The Comedown: What? Is this seriously their bestselling song? TOO poppy for my tastes. Not awful, but still. 6.5/10

9. Run: Nice tune. Haven't listened to it much, so can't say much more. 8.5/10

10. Canyon: A six-minute pop-ballad that I can actually stand to listen to. One of the best songs. 9.5/10

11. After the Flood: Um... I think I've heard this one, like, once, so I can't honestly rate it, but I think... 7/10

12. All Dead, All Dead: So you're SURE the lead singer of Queen is dead? Positive the band still isn't around anymore? I think otherwise... 9/10

13. Detroit (video): What the f...udge... OH now I get it. Wow. This is very depressing, and fantastic filmmaking if you pay attention to it. Video: 9/10

So all in all, this is great and I look forward to hearing more from Black Gold.

I was surprised how much I like this album. I got Detroit when it was Single of the Week, and thought it was pretty good. Bought the album, and found I like Shine, Plans and Reveries, and The Comedown even more.
