iTunes Review

Produced by Howard Benson (All-American Rejects, Seether, Daughtry), Lonely Road opens with "You Better Pray," an out-of-the-gates hit boasting the kind of lightning-speed, metal-tinged, fretboard shredding that Eddie Van Halen would dig. But it's Ronnie Winter's voice that takes center stage here, especially on the soaring and catchy "Pen & Paper" where his endearingly nasal-toned timbre cuts through the mix with a dire urgency. "Represent" opens with the staggered strumming of an acoustic guitar before gently exploding into a cinematic ballad replete with lilting strings and a romantic refrain well worthy of putting on a flirty mix for someone. The most interesting cut here is easily "Believe" as it pulls heavily from bygone doo-wop hits of the ‘50s with its waltzing harmonies and soulful backing vocals that flow under Winter's ascending vocal gymnastics. Speaking of soulful, the band employs a gigantic gospel choir to accompany them on the anthemic title track, resonating with a warm, Southern rock feel.

Lonley Road

1. You Bettter Pray- 7/10- Everyone seems to hate this song, but I think it is pretty decent. It did take some time to grow on me from when I first heard it though.
2. No Spell-8/10- One of my favorites on the album. Catchy chorus, cool verses.
3. Pen and Paper-9/10- One of my favorite songs lyrically on this album
4. Represent- 9/10 -Possibly runner up for favorite, but have to listen to the album more to know for sure. Love the chorus, good chorus.
5. Pull Me Back- 8/10- Was a little bland, generic to me at first lyrically but this has started to grow on me more.
6. Step Right Up- 8/10- This is a well sung song normally I really don't like love/girl songs, but this one is pretty good.
7. Believe- 8.5/10- Pretty Cheesy lyrics, but the best song vocally, love the chorus.
8. Pleads and Postcards-7.5/10- The most forgettable song on the album. I like it when I listen to it, but can never remember the chorus afterwards.
9.Lonley Road- 8.5/10- I thought this song was a little boring at first, but I like it a lot now.
10. Senioritis- 6.5/10- My least favorite track off the album. It is pretty awful lyrically in the chorus, maybe it will grow on me.
11. Godspeed-7.5/10- On first listen I just thought it was so-so, but the last time I listened to it I started to like it a lot more, it is growing on me.

Overall I would say this album is a B-, the first 4 songs are the best. The biggest problem is the lyrics, but Ronnie's vocals are great so that makes up for it a lot.

Sigh...

First off - If Don't you Fake it was a 5 star album, compared to it this can only be a 2 star album at max. It just does not have the intensity everyone fell in love with. I think we all expected this when we all heard "You Better Pray" come out though. On the negative side: not a single song with their punkish feeling from before. You Better Pray, in my opinion, is the worst song on the album, I have no idea what is going on in it and it sounds like Ronnie's voice got shoved into a box and is trying to break out. Also, a question everyone will be asking, "Where's the screaming?" I know a lot of people are going to be using the defense "They're maturing... evolving their sound..." blah blah blah, the fact is they got their fanbase with a screamo sound and we wanted to hear some more of it; without the integration of screaming they sound... well... boring. Also, the song "Lonely Road,".... uhhh ok am i listening to a country rock song? super lame. And I have no idea what they were going for with "Godspeed," that song's just weird, in a bad way. Time for the positives. "Represent" in my opinion is the best song on the album and reminds me of the songs "cat and mouse" and "Your Guardian angel"(sorta). "Pen & Paper" comes in second and "Senioritis" is a pretty good third place(best paced song and vocals are pretty good at times). I wouldn't recommend buying any other songs but if you really need to, "Believe" and "Step Right Up" would be next in line. So what's my conclusion? 3 good songs, 2 ok ones, 6 bad to terrible ones.... hmm dissapointing for sure.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Sprinkling their impassioned brand of alternative rock with touches of screamo, pop-punk, and metal, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus was originally born in 2003 in Middleburg, Florida. After writing and rehearsing for 18 months with no real intentions of either performing or recording, the bandmembers were urged by several friends to pursue their music seriously. This encouragement led the guys to book themselves several local shows, much to the quick embracement of their hometown scene. As the buzz grew,...
