iTunes Review

Hush, huh? What a fitting album title, actually, given that Asobi Seksu’s third full-length doesn’t clobber you over the head with fuzz-encased chords so much as drift on by like cumulus clouds on a clear day. Whether this is a deliberate attempt to strip the shoegazer revivalist tag from the duo’s next press kit doesn’t really matter. Bits of second-hand My Bloody Valentine-isms pop up throughout 12 tracks that epitomize the term “dream pop,” including the ricocheting rain shower beats of “In the Sky,” the shock therapy climax of “Me & Mary,” and the swirling effects/lightly-treated vocals that turn the entire record into a layer cake listen, best consumed on a decent pair of headphones or home theater speakers. While it’s definitely subtler than Asobi Seksu’s other two discs — “Risky and Pretty” is downright ambient — Hush is hypnotic and hazy in all the right ways, a breath of cold air for the hot summer months ahead.

pretty good!

A good album, but not really ground breaking. I love their sound on their previous release, but this just didn't grab me after a few weeks of listens. I still wouldn't consider them shoegaze, but more of a dream pop oriented outfit. Waiting for the true songwriting to break through to keep the sub category genres out of my ears. These days I feel too many focus more on what style they are playing rather than the content of the material. I look forward to the next release and will let this tide me over till then.

Asobi Seksu has gotten worse by the album

Their self-titled track was amazing. Kevin Shields was still out doing god-knows-what, and it was up to Asobi Seksu to be the saviors of shoegaze. the second album was still good, a little less MBV, a little more Slowdive-y, which was definitely cool. It seems like now that MBV is reunited, Asobi Seksu really dropped the ball and made a boring indie-pop album. Don't be fooled; if you think this sounds like a Cocteau Twins album, it sounds like a really crappy boring one. This album is capable of being used as background music, and no more.

Great album!

Bearing a hyper-stylized and glitzy graphic design sense, a pretty and petite Japanese female singer who sings alternately in Japanese and English, and a band name with a hint of nod-and-a-wink naughtiness (it's claimed to be a Tokyo-based slang term that means "playful sex"), Asobi Seksu comes across...
