Album Review

Although initially a leading light in the screamo/post-hardcore scene, Thursday began to transcend that movement in 2006, when A City by the Light Divided introduced an emphasis on dynamics and melodic nuance to the band's sound. Three years later, Thursday continue to buck trends with Common Existence, another melody-focused album cut with longtime Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann. Common Existence bears some trademarks of the band's classic screamo assault, but those aspects pale in comparison to Fridmann's own contributions, which help replicate the massive, multi-layered production found on his recent projects (including MGMT's Oracular Spectacular and Longwave's Secrets Are Sinister). Keyboardist Andrew Everding plays a key role here, his synthesized chords laying a gauzy framework for many songs, while frontman Geoff Rickly shows a good deal of restraint as he emphasizes singing over screaming. His voice sounds downright epic during "Circuits of Fire," where alternating time signatures and walls of guitar distortion find some middle ground between Brit-pop, emo, and (bizarrely enough) the anthemic prog of Dream Theater. Elsewhere, "Time's Arrow" pairs booming snare hits with ethereal harmonies, while songs like "Resuscitation of a Dead Man" and "Last Call" throw a bone to fans of the band's earlier work. In keeping with Thursday's evolution into a fierce alternative rock group, Common Existence is a somewhat streamlined release, with Rickly's screaming vocals only serving to punctuate the brief moments between more melodic segments. Critics of A City by the Light Divided will surely find fault with this album, but Common Existence is largely an enjoyable record that gives as much attention to mood and melody as muscle and might.

Customer Reviews

Impressive on Recording and Live, this album falls nothing short of their expectations

Thursday struck again and they definetely did not slow down. I just saw them on Saturday, two days ago, getting ready to be able to play all the new material to audiences who could sing along. Thursday definetely impresses me throughout the album, and here is a track by track review:

Resuscitation of a Dead Man: By far the best track on the album, Tim McIlrath vocals certainly add to the tracks diversity. 10/10

Last Call: A pretty catchy song, I like the occasional synthesizer in the background. The vocals really shine 9/10

As He Climbed the Dark Mountain: I think Thursday are really finding out who they are on this album, and they grasped all of the aspects they like best in their sound and threw it into this album. I like the screams on this track 9/10

Friends in the Armed Forces: One thing I have against this track is I don't like bands who talk politics, It just doesn't feel right to me, but the concept that he's talking about friends going through this time makes it easier to cope with 8/10

Beyond the Visible Spectrum: Beautiful song, really makes you think about life and what follows it 10/10

Time's Arrow: Nothing that will be remembered tomorrow 7/10

Unintended Long Term Effects: I like this song but not enough to go into detail 8/10

Circuits of Fever: The most unique track on this album, a fun listen 8.5/10

Subway Funeral: Great lyrics, but when have their lyrics not been amazing? 9/10

Love Has Led Us Astray: Eerie, it's a really emotional track imo, not that that's a bad thing.... 8.5/10

You Were the Cancer: An amazing ending to an amazing album. 10/10

Thursday really impresses on this disc, and I recommend this to anybody looking for good hardcore/alternative music. Thursday promises to impress in the future, and I can only wait to see them again.

One of the best albums you'll hear this year!

What an amazing and powerful album! It's classic Thursday: a collection of 11 great songs that bares little resemblance any of their other albums. You should be used to that, so don't expect Full Collapse II. That said, this album is not so different that it will be "unfamiliar" to most Thursday fans. "Subway Funeral", a song about Geoff's grandmother who passed away back in 2001, has the trademark "spoken word over musical build-up" that Thursday popularized in such classic tracks as "Paris In Flames" (from Full Collapse) and takes is to a new level. Last Call chugs along with the power of fan-favorite "Jet Black New Year" (from the Jet Black New Year EP). "Resuscitation of a Dead Man" and "Friends In The Armed Forces" took a little time for me to really get in to, but are solid songs. Thursday continue to push the boundaries of their sound with songs like "Time's Arrow" and "Love Has Led Us Astray", which sound like nothing we've yet heard on a past album. All in all, a record with heavy and creatively written music and some of the most sincere lyrics you will hear all year. Buy this now!!!

Heavy. Brutal. Beautiful.

Lyrically and musically engaging. Continue the progress. No one does anything like Thursday anymore.
