iTunes Review

For those who have already fallen under her spell, singer/songwriter Neko Case’s voice is a wonder. So when the fluttering guitar at the beginning of “This Tornado Loves You” ushers in Case’s mellifluous singing on her new release, Middle Cyclone, it’s like a comforting scent from junior high. Her fifth album has widescreen ambition coupled with an intimate-sounding execution. In addition to usual suspects the New Pornographers and Calexico, she also collaborates with everyone from Los Lobos to M. Ward to Garth Hudson (of the Band fame). The easy-swinging “Magpie to the Morning” sounds like a lost folk song once learned at summer camp, while her surprising interpretation of the Sparks’ “Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth” is as fresh and topical as ever. It's the ideal meeting of craft (strong arrangements and orchestrations) and art (Case's singular brand of singing plus inspired instrumental contributions) that made this highly anticipated album ultimately worth the wait.

One of the best!

Neko Case never ceases to amaze on this album with that top-shelf voice and a collection of very good songs. She makes what is certainly difficult, seem effortless. A great backing band and vocals add to the quality. Get this and enjoy one of the best artists out there. Here's five stars swirling in what appears to be a vortex.

Neko exceeds my expectations

by nowday

After listening to Neko's last album, Fox Professor Brings the Flood, I did not think she could come out with an album that was on par with that one. Well, I was wrong. I think this album may even be better than the last one, there I said it.

Neko has been a great find for me when I discovered her a few years ago. In a frustrating music industry filled with a bunch of generic crap, Neko Case and her dark angelic voice is a breath of fresh air. She tops my list of all time favorite artists.

I love this album so much, it would be impossible to pick a favorite

Great voice, middling melodies

As always, Neko Case's rich vocals are impeccable throughout Middle Cylcone. So, why the mediocre 3-star rating? In fact, 2 1/1-stars would be more accurate here, and they follow an equally blah effort on Fox Confessor. The problem is that Ms. Case is much better at singing other songwriters' material than her own. It's not her lyrics, which remain interesting and evocative. The problem is that Neko Case only appears to have one-and-a-half melodies inside her. But you need at least two, and preferably three, distinct melodies to be a true tunemeister. To get a sense of how great Ms. Case CAN be, I recommend "Magpie to the Morning" on this album, "Deep Red Bells" and "Runnin' out of Fools" from Blacklisted, and "Challengers" (title cut) with The New Pornographers. It's the collaborative effort with other songwriters and other bands that gives her singular voice the range it deserves.
