Album Review
There have been numerous attempts at summarizing Phyllis Hyman's career on one disc. Most have been severely flawed, whether it has come down to missing hit singles or poor selection of album cuts. And while Hyman didn't have that many chart hits (at least when compared to several of her contemporaries), there has always been the need for a double-disc compilation that goes deeper — allowing space for all the major singles and album cuts that deserve more attention. The Legacy of Phyllis Hyman fills that void. Although it might be a little too much for the person who just wants the songs heard on the radio, it's the next best thing to having all of her studio albums (all of which are spotty in varying degrees).

A Great Career Overview
by KADossVAI am sure that whomever was asked to assemble this compilation of Phyllis Hyman songs had a difficult task. What do you keep and what gets left out? While there are a quite a few essential songs missing, such as the exceptional "Meet Me on the Moon", "Don't Wanna Change the World" (her only song to reach #1 on the singles charts), "Sacred Kind of Love" with Grover Washington, Jr., "As You Are" with Pharoah Sanders, and several songs from "I Refuse to Be Lonely", I think this is better than any best of or greatest hits collection assembled because it goes deeper into Phyllis' catalogue. Kudos for including the haunting "When I Give My Love (This Time)", one of my favorite songs by Phyllis and "In a Sentimental Mood". More than a 4 but not quite a 5 - If I could I would give it a 4 1/2 (but since that's not an option it gets a 5).
