iTunes Review
Together and separately, Buddy and Julie Miller have never shied away from life’s sorrows, and 2009’s Written In Chalk — the second collaborative project from this married singer/songwriter duo — is no exception. Loss is a reoccurring theme, captured with poignancy in “Don’t Say Goodbye,” “Long Time,” and “Hush, Sorrow.” Especially moving is “June,” a haunting farewell tribute to June Carter Cash. “Gasoline and Matches” and “Memphis Jane” relieve the album’s downcast mood with jolts of blues-rock energy, while “Ellis County” celebrates the virtues of hardscrabble country living. Guest stars like Robert Plant (harmonizing on a thumping version of Mel Tills’ “What You Gonna Do Leroy”) and Patty Griffin (joining in on the keening ballad “Chalk”) are used effectively. Most of all, the pleasures of this album lie in the heart-tugging interplay of Buddy’s rough-cut vocals with Julie’s fragile, waif-like tones. Written In Chalk is a somber work in the tradition of American tragic balladry; once again, the Millers have drawn beauty out of darkness.

I'm a convert..
by Photoguy2This album was my introduction to Buddy and Julie. On first listen I liked it on the 2nd listen I loved it... on the 25th listen I'm loving it even more. I now own everything both Buddy and Julie have done. I've not found a bad tune yet. This is music for the soul... roots music if you will. It transcends the genre of Country and is so much more. Be well Buddy.

by PastorChuckBuddy and Julie Miller need no introduction to many listeners, but if you are not familiar with their music you are in for a wonderful surprise. Julie has proven once again she is one of America's best (though underrated) songwriters. Her lyrics are heartfelt and authentic, even when dealing with painful subjects. The pain of loss and the power of hope infuse this collection with strong undercurrents of sadness and joy. Julie's voice is one-of-a-kind and as always poignant and powerful. "Don't Say Goodbye" is a masterpiece lyrically and vocally. Buddy's subdued and understated production make the song even more compelling. "Chalk" is one of Buddy's best vocal ever - perfectly suited for a duet with Patty Griffin. The Buddy/Julie duet, "Ellis County" may be this album's highlight - heartfelt memories expressed in sepia-toned images of times goneby. I love the words and music of this song. Buddy and Julie's vocal compliment each other. A couple of other standouts - "Memphis Jane" features a "get-stuck-in-your-head" guitar riff (attributed to Julie) and "Gasoline and Matches" is a fun song sung by a couple still in love after many years of marriage. All of Julie's back catalog from the Christian market and beyond is incredible and Buddy's recent country releases are rock solid. But this new collaboration sets a new standard, even for them. Enjoy it!
Desert Island recording
by ChasyboyCalling this a country record is a grave injustice because many people will just discount its content out of hand. YOU MUST buy this record. If you have any taste, whatsoever..you will recognize the naked beauty of the songs, lyrics, production and playing. I've been a casual fan of Buddy and Julie for a few years but maybe because I've been starving for this type of record from someone, I cannot adequately express how much I admire this record. From the sounds to the soul, from the tears to the joy, from the elegance to the raw, this record has it all in spades. It's one of those records that when you first listen...it shakes you a bit (especially Gasoline and Matches) but as you get into the words and tones, you are struck with the risks and truths that make up these performances. Take some time and listen with headphones or loud in your car. I promise, you will not be sorry. Julie reminds me of some of the great Rickie Lee Jones stuff from way back when. The addition of a few of their friends like Patti Griffith and Robert Plant...you'll know why they probably begged to be a part of this. Stylish playing and simplistic excellence in Buddy's playing, I so wish they would get their credit beyond those in the music scene cause this stuff is powerful and should not be ignored. Thank you, Millers. Oh, and thank you God for keeping Buddy with us a little longer.
