iTunes Review

The Decemberists have always been high on ambition and their fifth album is yet another conceptual coup in which a woman named Margaret is abducted by a villain known as “The Rake,” while a political character (“Valerie Plame”), a child murder, and other deaths visit the picture. All of which suggests the Decemberists have at least one foot in the progressive rock ambitions of the ‘70s. The additional use of Jethro Tull-like dynamics and orchestration suggest this Portland, Oregon ensemble are ready to take the complete plunge and pretend as if the past three decades never happened. Yet, one doesn’t have to pay strict attention to the plotline or lyric sheet to appreciate the melancholy of “Isn’t It A Lovely Night?” One might want to keep a scorecard to keep track of the impressive cast of voices, ranging from Robyn Hitchcock to My Morning Jacket’s Jim James to Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark. It’s a 17-part musical that breaks down into digestible smaller pieces for the conceptually challenged.

Great album

This is the first time I have ever felt inclined to write a review for an album. I bought this one last night and have listened straight through 3 times since then. Each cut flows naturally into the next and it is probably best if you can devote an hour to listen to the entire album at one go. One of the best albums I have heard in years.

bloat

lots of noise surrounded the arrival of this cd, which is bloated and really pretty aweful I think. fairport convention's "babbacombe lee, " from which a lot of this is ripped, was a lot better but its about 30 yrs old.

I'm completely blown away

This album was my introduction to the Decemberists, who I had heard of but never heard. Needless to say, I didn't quite know what to expect when I popped the CD in to take a listen. Immediately I was smitten with this band! I have listened to the Hazards of Love more than any other album this year. I also got the privilege of seeing them play at Bonnaroo and I was equally impressed. If you are in any way a fan of an album that transitions smoothly from start to finish, has a unifying theme and just plain rocks, you need to buy this album!

Led by Helena, MT, native Colin Meloy, Portland, OR's the Decemberists craft theatrical, hyper-literate pop songs that draw heavily from late-'60s British folk acts like Fairport Convention and Pentangle and the early-'80s college rock grandeur of the Waterboys and R.E.M. The band's initial lineup also...
