Album Review

The difference in the basic sound of MSTRKRFT's first album, Looks, and the follow-up, Fist of God, isn't huge. Both are built around buzzing old-school synths, thunderous drums, and jumpy, floor-filling disco and robo-funk. The main change is that the vocodered vocals than dominated Looks have been replaced by a parade of collaborators who include Ghostface Killah, E-40, Freeway, John Legend, N.O.R.E., and Jahmal of Toronto band the Carps. "It Ain't Love," which matches a storming rhythm track with a fiery vocal from Lil' Mo, is the record's highlight. The rest is filled with good-time dance music that won't inspire repeated listens but might sound good over speakers in a nightclub.

Why so many tracks with other artists?

This album is a stepdown from their past work and a little disappointing. The tracks themselves are okay but something is missing.

If you dig MSTRKRFT, you might like a new compilation from CB Lyon called "French Kiss" that's out on iTunes. It features tracks by Joachim Garraud and A Girl and A Gun. Check it out!!

solid album

not every track sounds alike, and they aren't all weak either.
bounce is a great party track, heartbreaker is an awesome song, and fist of god and click click have great beats
this is a great cd to jam to, but true, not every track stands solid

Why the hip-hop, electronic collab.?

I really wasn't expecting this from MSTRKRFT, I mean Bounce was good, but Click-Click, and Word up isn't them, even the beats aren't all that, those vocals are just not meant to be. I like that they kept the distorted bass lines and the tight kicks (what happened to the claps?), they got a little dark with their songs. I think "The Looks" had way more variety and lots of thought put into it, and thinking this would like the "ultimate" MSTRKRFT album, lead to great dissappointment.
