iTunes Review

"In 2006, the Los Angeles-based Silversun Pickups brought a bit of pure rock explosiveness into the air with their first full-length, Carnavas, and especially the rumbling single "Lazy Eye." With lead singer Brian Aubert's whispery, razor-sharp vocals and the band's use of extraordinary loud bursts of power chords, the group drew comparisons to the dreamier, noisier bands of the early '90s. Swoon won't alienate fans who appreciated that element of their first album, but it's likely to bring in more converts thanks to the material’s strength. The opening track, "There's No Secrets This Year," aims for the heavens and nearly gets there, leaving a trail of blazing guitars behind it. After that grand entry, it's a mix of forceful pop, (the cosmic buzz of "The Royal We" and "Subsitition") sweet, lulling sounds ("Draining"), and epics ("It's Nice to Know You Work Alone"). Aided by minimal but effective strings and songs that up the ante — going for something deeper, more epic, and more powerful — Swoon is a triumph on all fronts."

Had Me Swooning....

This album, by far, was the serious chemical shock of my year. Swoon is amazing! Great for anybody who's a fan of this band or whose thinking of diggin' a bit deeper into them. At first, I was a huge fan of Carnavas, which is what got me into the Pickups in the first place, for every track on that one was killer. But Swoon to me is even better. The songs are pulsating, melodic, whispery (some songs literally sound like gossamer pulling at your ear drums) and down right dark to me. From 'There's No Secrets This Year' it utterly starts off at a jumping, grinding pulsating beat and then towards the end of the song and the album sort of gently glides sinisterly away. Complete genius. 'Panic Switch' is sort of the manic intermission of the album and then 'Sort Of' jumps back into the meldoic, 'tuneful crack' mix of the sound. 'Catch and Release' literally made me weep and the last track 'Surrounded (Or Spiraling)' floats off extremely musically. Song makes u think! But overall, buy Swoon and you really will swoon.

Brian Aubert (guitar/vocals), Nikki Monninger (bass), Christopher Guanlao (drums), and Joe Lester (keyboards) comprise the swarthy indie rock stylings of Silversun Pickups. The quartet's textured melodies capture the hypnotic dream pop threads of My Bloody Valentine and pop bitter sweetness of Earlimart,...
