iTunes Review

Four years after Some Cities, Doves return triumphant with the heavy, epic rumbling sound of Kingdom of Rust. The trio's penchant for minor chords and reverb-heavy production drapes the new album in overcast, moderately melancholy tones, and an underlining theme of movement and travel affords their fourth album a kinetic aesthetic. On opening track, “Jetstream,” frontman Jimi Goodwin sings about catching a drift on a troubled dream as the instrumentation gradually creates the feeling of dislocated movement — with the eventual appearance of stomping drums, cascading electronic.s and an effective, minimal guitar riff. Hints of woozy psychedelia color “10:03”, which starts like Coldplay-meets-Glasvegas and ends with a thundering U2-inspired groove, and the trio is occasionally accompanied by violin and cello (“Kingdom of Rust,” “Birds Flew Backwards”) for swirling, orchestral atmospherics.

Customer Reviews

Shimmering, Melodic, Delicious, Sonic Head Candy

Doves never disappoint and Kingdom of Rust delivers all the goods. Any fans of the Doves will be very happy to the delicious sounds that greet their ears. Non-fans should be quite happy with a band with an awesome sound. If you like Elbow, Travis, Coldplay, Radiohead, you will like Doves. The whole album really is great from start to finish with my personal favorites being Jetstream, Kingdom of Rust, The Outsiders, Winter Hill, 10:03, and House of Mirrors. House of Mirrors has a wicked chorus. You can hear it on the 30 second sample so give it a go. Anywho, I hope the Doves do well this album. I was more than happy to plop down 10 bucks for this piece of sonic mastery. Enjoy!!

This album is solid...

...but can we please stop comparing Doves to Coldplay? Doves are much more creative and, um, aren't sellouts.

Best Doves Release Ever!

As an owner of all previous Doves releases, Kingdom of Rust is by far their best album to date. Sonically, lyrically, and esoterically spiritual, Doves continue to churn out magical music for the masses. If you have never purchased their music, start by downloading this entire album!

Biography

Formed: 1998 in Manchester, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Before embracing Brit-pop in the late '90s, Doves' three members — vocalist/bassist Jimi Goodwin, guitarist Jez Williams, and drummer Andy Williams — figured prominently in the Madchester scene, where they scored a Top Five single as part of the dance combo Sub Sub. "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)" peaked at number three in the U.K., but Sub Sub failed to produce any significant follow-up hits, and a fire destroyed their recording studio in February 1995. After taking several years to restructure...
