Album Review
Although the Welcome Wagon roll their wheels over familiar territory, the band's debut is still somewhat bewildering. At their root, these songs flaunt little more than homespun melodies and basic chord progressions, featuring 12 gospel-influenced narratives in the folk tradition. Such minimalism forms the basis of the Welcome Wagon, whose two members — the husband-and-wife duo of Rev. Vito Aiuto and Monique Aiuto — are content to keep things short and simple. On the other hand, collaborator/producer Sufjan Stevens rarely abides by those rules; instead, he designs towering buildings out of the Aiutos' simple structures, adding flourishes to all the surfaces and strengthening the foundation with layers of horns, choirs, and pianos. At its most ornate, Welcome to the Welcome Wagon simply sounds like Stevens' own record, leaving the Aiutos with little identity of their own. This is especially evident on "Sold! To the Nice Rich Man," a knockout song that nevertheless sounds like a reheated leftover from the Illinoise sessions. Full of minor-key soul and brassy trumpets, it's one of the most appetizing songs here — yet it's also indicative of the producer's authority, which doesn't quite augment the Welcome Wagon's sound as much as commandeer it. That's not to say that Stevens always occupies the spotlight; on tracks like "He Never Said a Mumblin' Word" and "Deep Were His Wounds, and Red," the Aiutos regain control with an emphasis on stark, gospel-gothic lyrics. These are songs of crucifixion, of loss, of Christianity's melancholic side, and they sound worlds apart from the orchestral, summery numbers conducted by the producer. So while Welcome to the Welcome Wagon admittedly sounds its best when peppered with swelling strings and choir crescendos, the Aiutos' heart seems to rest in the simpler numbers, creating an album that's often strong but nevertheless conflicted.

If you like Sufjan Stevens and Jesus you
by Sue_CashI read about this band in paste magazine and I wanted to check them out. Best way to discribe this album is Sufian Stevens if he did Christian songs. It's got his influence all over this (after all, he produced it) and you hear it throughout. Same kind of harmonies, banjo strumming, guitar picking, horn section, piano playing, etc. If you're Saved this album will full you with joy, if you're not you'll love the music. I should warn those of you who are not keen on Jesus it is LOADED WITH HIM. I really like this record, and the reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I reserve that kind of rating to The Beatles, The Who, and Dylan. You know, the best of the best.
Oh so sweet!
by HellOhThis is a refreshing band with a lot to say. This is a very honest recording both sonically and lyrically. It's very tough to do what they are doing without being pigeon toed into a genre of boring monotany. Music in the "Christian" market is (IMO) usually very cliche and not well thought out... but Welcome To The Welcome Wagon is surely heartfelt and very well crafted! No slick Nashville production or 2 year old "Top 40" type songs written with Godly Lyrics... just sweet, raw, and beautiful music! This should make many people and musicians rethink what religious music can be and should be... top notch and different! There are no rules when you are creating songs and Sufjan stuck to that when producing this. His influence and creativity really make this record shine. Don't draw up any preconceptions before you listen to this record... it will make you smile on the inside!
Delightful record!
by Joshua KOIt might be interesting to note that the Vito Aiuto was actually the lead singer on Sufjan Stevens' Christmas songs "I Saw Three Ships" and "Once In David's Royal City". You might not have noticed, though, because his voice sounds quite a bit like Sufjans' but a little less airy.
