Stripped to a trio, Williamsport, PA’s Akron/Family haven’t lost a single, ornate touch. If anything, they’ve expanded their sound to include an eclectic mix of horns, keyboards, ensemble backing vocals and various other indecipherable touches that add an element of soul band funk to their otherwise hippie-folk campground séance weave. “Everyone Is Guilty” warps a third-world charm around the band’s tent-folk-rock charm. “MBF” screeches with ‘70s hard rock guitars that are as close these guys are likely to come to actual garage rock. “River” and “Set ‘Em Free, Pt.1” warble with acoustic guitars and a bucolic back-to-the-land approach. But mainly the group concerns itself with keeping a loose, open, free-floating atmosphere where it sounds as if anything might happen at any time. “They Will Appear” assembles for tight harmonies and tribal beats. Low budget Pink Floyd with freaky-folk and indie pop lurking in the shadows of progressive rock? Attempting to nail this trio down is futile. Hang on for dear life and enjoy the hairpin stylistic turns.

by Dr. Ken NoisewaterI bought this album after a few good reviews and a recommendation from a friend, and after a few listens my mind was made up- this is one of the best albums I've heard so far this year. It is so dynamic, each song so different but flowing so well into the next. The first half of the album is arguably the most solid combining many different genres of music without sounding overdone. I never heard any of their other records before I heard this but I would have to say this is their tour-de-force. It should be listened to in its entirety but if you need some early persuading I would suggest 1-5, 9, and 10. "River" is probably the most radio-friendly, "Creatures" has a slick hip-hoppy feel, "Alps" and "Set 'Em Free" are acoustic goodness while the end of the album wraps things up properly. Get it.

by skrabadoozlebut this is an extraordinary album. A band that can move on past the departure of their lead singer and put forth a watershed album such as "Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free" should be commended thoroughly. Perfect campfire music, perfect driving music, perfect roll up a smoke and hang on the back/front porch music. This, as someone has already stated previously, will be a contender for album of the year. Akron/Family makes beautiful music with minimal effort and ego, and this album is a testament to that. Buy it and see for yourself.
