iTunes Review

In his 60s, Iggy Pop throws in an unexpected mix of French pop and jazz, in addition to his usual rock strut, for this musical soundtrack to French author Michel Houellebecq’s eventually successful effort to make a film of his fourth novel The Possibility of An Island. It’s the story of an entertainer whose success as a social critic has worn him down to humanity and made him wish for an anonymous life on the Spanish coast. Pop’s a capable vocalist to deliver the dark news and worldview, landing somewhere near Leonard Cohen in the basso profundo darklands (“A Machine For Loving”). Yet, it isn’t all debonair serenading, though the Yves Montand and Edith Piaf standard “Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves)” is mighty smooth. “Nice To Be Dead” cranks with an agitated guitar feedback fueling Pop’s deep throat confessions. However, the mood more closely aligns with the subtle pulsing shades of “How Insensitive” where Pop croons off into the distance. “Party Time” begins with 80s-styled keyboards and mechanical beats. “He’s Dead / She’s Alive” is a lo-fi acoustic jam. “King of the Dogs” works its way to New Orleans.

These reviews of Iggy Pop's "Preliminaires" are some of the best iTunes reviews of anything -- and yes: The album is unbelievably cool, familiar, dreamlike and poised. To imagine music like this, and to pull it off with such panache transcends the rare -- no far beyond transcending rare, this music is something that you would expect to discover as the native soundtrack in some ancient cavern that aliens or people who subsequently lost everything built... wow. (Made to be played L O U D on good equipment.)

Iggy found his new sound but...

Iggy discovered his new sound with the help of Goran Bregovic during the making of the song 'IN THE DEATH CAR' for Goran's project. It worked beautifully and THAT was the start of Iggy's new direction. This 'Preliminaries' collection is good but find the beginning..... find 'In the Death Car'.

Some albums leave you feeling like you've taken a journey to somewhere wonderful and you can't wait to return to that place. This is one of those albums. Everytime I listen to it I am left wanting more. If there is any criticism it is that the album is so short. But better to have a flawless record of 12 short songs than a two hour record of trash. Iggy has outdone himself on this one.

There's a reason why many consider Iggy Pop the godfather of punk — every single punk band of the past and present has either knowingly or unknowingly borrowed a thing or two from Pop and his late-'60s/early-'70s band, the Stooges. Born on April 21, 1947, in Muskegon, MI, James Newell Osterberg...
