iTunes Review

This sensitive, Nashville-based singer/songwriter flashed a penchant for rapping hard-hitting stories between sung choruses on his major-label debut, Nothing Left to Lose. Three years later, Kearney's artistic voice minus the raps plays this album out like a love letter. “All I Have” finds Kearny addressing a physically distant love, admitting heartbreak amidst a smooth mix of guitar and piano. On “Closer to Love,” a funky backbeat and soulful piano melody kick in after the line, “I guess we’re all one phone call from our knees,” bolstering the masterful storytelling. “New York to California” is a man-and-his-piano ballad with an intimacy that’s matched by the haunting, carpe-diem-themed “City of Black & White.” There’s a push-and-pull dynamic to this album, but despite the rugged soul-searching, the music is soft and warm, often accented with orchestral instrumentation and tender harmonies. While City of Black & White veers from the hard-luck raps featured on Nothing Left to Lose (reminiscent of singer/rapper Everlast), fans of musicians such as the Fray and Coldplay should be especially pleased with the outcome.

Great Album

by Jep1011

I was really worried this album could not top Nothing Left To Lose. (With some as my favorite songs like Breathe In Breathe Out, Girl America,In the Middle, Nothing Left To Lose, Undeniable, and What's a Boy To Do) NLTL was awesome....but I certainly was not disappointed by this album. It's definitly different than his previous albums but not in a bad way. I was a fan of his rapping, (if you want to call it that) especially in songs like Girl America and Undeniable, and while City of Black and White does not have that element to it, it's still awesome and one of those albums you can listen to straight through and love almost every track.

All I Have- great opening track. Upbeat and gets stuck in your head. 5/5
Fire and Rain- one of my favorites. Its slow at first and then picks up with a great beat and great lyrics as always 5/5
Closer to Love- When I first heard this which is the first single off the album, I was really surprised because I didn't expect it. But its really great. I like Mat's new style 5/5
Here We Go- One of my favorites. I love the ending sequence when his voice fades out 5/5
Lifeline- really inspiring track. slow yet soothing. Top 3 on the album 5/5
New York to California- not my favorite because it starts to sound the same after a while. But not horrible either 3/5
Runaway Car- my favorite on the album. Its classic Mat, yet its just so beautiful and i love the background elements he adds in the beginning. 5/5
Never Be Ready- good track. doesnt stand out among the other great ones though. 4/5
Annie- really genuine and easy to listen to 3/5
Straight Away- solid track from Mat 4/5
On and On- good slow track. lyrics are really good. 4/5
City of Black and White- I love the instrumentals on this track. This song reminds me a lot of the stuff on his last album. Really great 5/5

Bonus tracks- I'm not in love with Everyone I know but the acoustic version of Here We Go is definitly worth the buy!
Overall, I was not disappointed at all with this album and I suggest that anyone who loves his earlier stuff should definitly buy this!

Good, but different

I agree with most of the previous reviews, I think his new stuff is very good though. I do miss the pseudo-rap feel of his last album and I wish this album had some of those aspects, but I really enjoy all the songs on his new album. A solid sophomore album. Hopefully the next album will bring back some old flair from his first album.

Every song is good

I have seen him perform in concert twice and he is a huge talent. Every song on this CD is good. It will grow on you, trust me. You will hear similarity to U2 and Coldplay. This guy is great.
