New Hip Hop for a New Era

Mr. SOS has proven time and time again that he's got what it takes to be an everlasting emcee for The New Hip Hop. Whether he's spitting witty punch lines or illustrating a meaningful story, listeners will revel in the fact that he is much more than your run-of-the-mill rapper. With SOS's debut LP, he pushes expectations for Hip Hop albums of today to a new height, lyricism and production-wise.

Previously, I was slightly concerned with how well SOS could handle a conceptual solo LP. However, once I heard the singles "Bionic" and "Apocalyptic Doomsday," my only concerns were with how long it was going to be until I could hear this album in its entirety. Tracks like "Bionic" and "I Can't Sleep" will leave you in need of a neck brace. Meanwhile, masterpieces such as "Apocalyptic Doomsday" and "The Balance" have the capability of leaving the most fed up Hip Hop listener in awe.

Regardless of which songs I name here, each song has its own purpose on this record. There are no fillers, there are no dull skits, there are no songs that will call for a skip forward button. This is a well-rounded Hip Hop album that any fan of good music can enjoy.

Bleakly Brilliant...the first GREAT rap album of 2009

When an artist's first track on their debut album is entitled "Apocalyptic Doomsday" you KNOW they mean business. The concept here is bleak, paranoid, dystopian, the rhymes are dark, hypnotic and expertly penned and the music is futuristic and eerie.

In regards to the music itself, it's a finely crafted piece of progressive hip hop. With beats that would sit well next to the most bolt-stripping subwoofer fodder that 1989 Miami-bass had to offer. Oddly enough, it still feels rooted in the hip hop genre and never feels like its trying too hard. The highwire line between boom-bap and electro is walked with the grace of Cirque De Soleil. Besides the afroementioned track, standouts include the Tonedeff-produced "Bionic", the emotionally lush "The Balance" and the wonderfully paranoid "What's MK Ultra". The instrumental "Expose" is also a wicked touch to bring the wide spectrum of the album to a close.

For fans of his work on CunninLynguists Southernunderground album, he's still got that unmistakably knack for syncopation in his delivery and elequence to convery his personal struggles - the difference is that this is an aritst who has evolved as a person as well as a lyricist. This is darker. This is adult. This is music by someone who's lived more. With this album Mr. SOS proves without a doubt, that he's a self sufficient, forward thinking solo artist to be reckoned with.

Absolutley Amazing

At first I was nervous because this album sounds so different from anything SOS has done in the past but this album has completly blown me away. Very quickly becoming one of my favorite albums of all time!
