Time Turns Fantastic
by Space JoggerI saw Phish throw this down at Fenway and it was an outstanding performance. No other band is creative enough, or talented enough to pull this music off live. This tune is complex, therefore simple-minded will not comprehend. This tune requires imagination, some people do not have it.
I love the different aspects of this composition, as the music leads you through a journey of time and space. At the end of the journey the listener is rewarded with cumulative concentration and relaxtion, which equals meditation. Phish is next level!!!
Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar
by Henry Zane MorganListening to this latest of what can be considered Phish's more compositional tunes (such as "Guyute", "Reba", "Run Like An Antelope" or the classic "You Enjoy Myself"), I am reminded of what makes Phish great. I am also reminded of why they have failed to reach a broader audience. Trey Anastasio has always been one to layer idea upon idea, with one song progressing through varied tensions, highs and lows, key changes, rhythm changes, and of course - sections of truly inspiring lead guitar. This piece includes all of the above, spread throughout an impressive 13 minutes and 30 seconds. It is plain to see that composer/guitarist/singer Trey Anastasio has evolved compositionally, with this piece leaning towards key changes and chromatic whimsy. Where the compositional element is often interesting, the vocal element is often distracting. Anastasio has always been centered on his music, and has rarely written a melody that transcends the central chords and rhythms of his songs. They function almost as harmony to the music, leaving the melody work for the lead guitar. I would be interested in hearing this piece as an instrumental, with Anastasio's incredible lead guitar work taking the melodic focus. Overall, there is plenty to enjoy within this piece, but Zappa said it best, shut up and play yer guitar.
If you are slamming this, have your ears scooped out!
by gregjonesThis song is a masterpiece!
For Phish, this is their Terrapin.
If you can't hear that you're just a silly pseudo phan.
Period. Can't wait until the next show, where ever that may be for me......
