Album Review

In just four albums, California's Dredg have run the gamut from atonal, angular alternative metal outfit to epic, unpredictable progressive rockers with one foot in "loud/quiet/loud" world of emo and the other in genre-defying abyss of art rock. Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion represents the best of both worlds, employing top-notch musicianship, meticulous production, and memorable melodies atop an ambitious narrative culled from (in part) a Salman Rushdie essay called "Imagine There's No Heaven: A Letter to the 6 Billionth Citizen." While weeding through the wreckage of science, sociology, and religion for the quivering individual may seem like heavily guarded Radiohead territory, Dredg pulls it off with the human heart still intact. At 18 tracks, it can be a lot to swallow, but keep in mind that many of these are transitional pieces and rarely overstay their welcome. Obvious singles like "I Don't Know," "Saviour," and "Pariah" may be "modern rock" radio-ready, but they're "mathy" enough for the tech-loving music geeks, highbrow enough for the progressive rock elitists, and emotional enough for bike riding indie rockers.

Ireland

When I hear the song Ireland, I think of California, my home. I imagine California's beautiful scenery as it must've looked before it became overpopulated with people and pollution.

Great group, great album

Great album - start to finish. Theme of album is questioning religion without being blatant/creepy/in your face. More self-introspecitve.
1. Pariah 8/10 - good song, but the na nana nana kids choir at the begining is unlistenable- once the the song starts its great
2. Drunk Slide - 6/10 Just a fun little filler/transitional instrumental
3. Ireland - 9/10 Great song, message is congruent with the rest of the album Questions I was born this way-will die this way religion stance of many individuals
4. Pesimistic - 6/10 Just a little transitional peace
5. Light Switch 10/10 - Awesome song with fun lyrics (I was put in a round room and told to sit in the corner while they washed my brain with a dirty rag, etc)
6. Gathering Pebbles - 7/10 I like the song until the seemingly endless "will catch up" repeated - My kids start chanting "with mustard" (lasts a long time)
7. Information 10/10 - Maybe their best song yet. Why didn't they play this song on tour?
8. Ocean meets Bay - 5/10 transitional - nothing special
9. Savior 10/10 - The lively rocker on the album.
10. RUOK - 6/10 -Transitional song OK
11. I Don't Know 10/10 - Great song.
12. Morning the Morning - 5/10 - As close to filler as the album has(for a real song as opposed to the transitional pieces). Some people like it - not me, especially the strings
13. Look around 7/10 - Transitional song - good message
14. Long Days and Vague clues - 5/10 - a little instrumental piece that sounds like it could end up on a Tim Burton soundtrack
15. Cartoon Showroom - 10/10 - Amazing - slower piece with Dino on keyboard. Was the equipment takedown song on tour.
16. Quotes 9/10 - Great song
17. Down to the Cellar - 6/10 good winddown song for the album- wouldn't listen to it as a single.
18. Horizons - 6/10 good close song - wouldn't listen to as single

Not a Disappointment

It's is extremely rare that an artist can produce an album where EVERY song is amazing...but it has happened with this album by Dredg. It's refreshing to see a group of actual musicians who have mastered their craft. I completely recommend this album to anyone. My favorite songs are Gathering Pebbles, Information, Saviour and Mouring This Morning. You won't be disappointed when you get his album. Also they are amazing in concert which i just had the privledge to be able to see this week.
