iTunes Review

In the ‘80s, Dinosaur Jr. became synonymous with the type of roaring, distorted rock that helped pioneer the alternative movement. J Mascis was the mastermind behind the Massachusetts power trio and the gifted guitarist/singer/songwriter with a detached drawl ended up parting ways with the other members … only to reunite in 2005. Farm, Dinosaur Jr.’s ninth studio album — and second consecutive offering featuring the original lineup — was produced and written exclusively by Mascis, with the exception of two tracks penned by bassist Lou Barlow ("Your Weather" and "Imagination Blind"). From the boisterous opener (“Pieces”), it’s clear we’re hearing a rejuvenated DJ in all of its noise-pop glory. The one-two punch of “Over It” and “Friends” is powerful, while “Said the People” and “See You” temporarily slow the pace — the latter being the album’s most stripped-down, pop-y number. Farm often conveys sentient sentiments (that everyone is interconnected) and “We want to leave behind what can’t be held” from closing track, “Imagination Blind,” could double as the seminal band’s mantra.

Possibly their best album

I've been a fan of Dinosaur Jr. since the around 1990 and have enjoyed most everything they put out, especially their early albums. When bands get older, they often lose their edge but this definitely isn't the case with Dinosaur Jr. and their latest album. I've listened to it many, many times and I'm always surprised at how good and tight it sounds. A couple of favorite tracks are Pieces and See You. I only hope they keep producing more gems like this one...

Dinosaur Jr. is the most underated band of the 90s. j macis is the best guitarist of his era and this album doesn't leave you wanting. I saw Dino Jr. @ Zoots in Portland ME and J had just lost his dad. J asked if no one would mind if he bypassed the vocals and the crowd silently braced themselves for the choppin onslaught that was sure to ensue. THANK YOU FOR THAT NIGHT J. Macis bleeded on guitar that night and he bleeds on every album. Culture yourself and get a little Dinosaur Jr. in your life.

Incredible

Dinosaur Jr. is still as thunderous as they were back in the eighties. From Mascis' moaning of "save me" and the magnigicant songwriting this is a must-have. Metal riffs with not-so-polished guitar solos hits a classic-rock charisma that they usually do not do. "Should I take it home?" Yes, buy it and take it home!

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing,...
