Album Review

Jay Brannan dives into his iPod collection with In Living Cover, a collection of cover songs and original material. The two original tunes featured here — "Beautifully" and "Drowning" — take their cues from the Lilith Fair school of songwriting, mixing bookish lyrics with bursts of acoustic guitar. The effect is reinforced by Brannan's voice, a somewhat androgynous tenor whose range and tone serve him well on the covers, too. Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, and the Cranberries all serve as source material for Brannan's six cover songs, and he pays tribute to those artists with soft, acoustic renditions of their hits. When he ditches the acoustic guitar and performs DiFranco's "Both Hands" with an a cappella arrangement, the result is striking, due in no small part to his imaginative reinterpretation of the original.

i guess it's the 7th somewhere?!

I love this genre of music, specifically Jay Brannan. If it's not the crazy good guitar his lyrics are (for lack of a better word) great!!!! :) truley a beautiful person/artist, even though i don't know him!

Brannan does it again!

If you've had the pleasure of listening to "Unmastered" or "Goddamned," you know that Jay Brannan is talented. Listening to "In Living Color" shows yet another side. His covers of the popular "Say It's Possible" by Terra Naomi and "Both Hands" by Ani DiFranco are not to be missed. Add 2 original songs to the album and you've got a hit! Jay Brannan is taking over the world one download at a time!

JAY BRANNAN DOES IT AGAIN

Jay does it again. He is one of those rare artists that surfaces rarely (5 or so in a century). What makes Jay special in his talent? He has a voice which fits the genre of his music; he is an incredible song writer as I love his own songs, as well as anything else he does. His instrumental talents are, for a lack of a better word, perfect. I look forward to hearing many more albums and songs by Jay.
KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK.

Biography

Genre: Contemporary Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '00s

Texas-born singer, songwriter, and actor Jay Brannan's angelic voice and folky, acoustic approach may make him appear like a garden-variety contemporary singer/songwriter, but his musical sensibility brings him closer to hard-to-fit-in-a-box female artists like Ani DeFranco, Lisa Loeb, Sinéad O'Connor, or Liz Phair, and he sounds like nothing so much as a male version of Joni Mitchell at times. Brannan appeared as Seth in John Cameron Mitchell's 2006 film Shortbus and his song "Soda Shop" was featured...
