Great Sophomore Album from a Great Canadian Band

by IndianaRose

Mobile's second album Tales from the City is a great follow-up to 2006's Tomorrow Starts Today. Available since October in the Great White North, now they bring their inde-rock magic to the U.S. The American version features four extra songs, including a re-recording of Dusting Down the Stars, from their first album.

Song-by-song review:
Daylight Breaks: 10/10 - good buildup with incredible, bombastic guitar riff & epic surrounding sound
The Killer: 10/10 - first single, stands out really well and contains the authentic "Mobile Sound"
No Tomorrow: 9/10 - dark & spooky song, very effective & heavy song
Dusting Down the Stars ('09): 8/10 - I liked the original better but this version is good too; check out the original first
Live to Find: 9/10 - tugs at the heartstrings; very emotional song
Gravity: 10/10 - one of my favs from the album; tells the story of an assassin's hit; great sound & guitar riffs
Slow Motion Car Crash: 8/10 - good follow for Gravity; thought-provoking, big sound with a lot of synths
Hit the Floor #7: 9/10 - second single released in Canada; basic song, but like another Mobile hit "Out of My Head," you can easily dance to it; good song
Mother: 8/10 - good song to play during a rainstorm or when you're lonely
Sweet Light: 8/10 - features the voice of Arianne Moffatt, French singer from Quebec; not my fav, but still solid
All Is Forgiven: 8/10 - again, not my favorite, but a good finale to the album (next 3 are bonus tracks); very reflective
The Low Road: 9.5/10 - one of four tracks (DDTS, Electrolove, Don't Wait) that appear exclusively on the US version; has the Mobile Sound, which is always a plus; very catchy
Electrolove: 10/10 - Fantastic song, great hooks, a real treat for Mobile fans
Don't Wait: 8.5/10 - not a big fan of the excessive synths, but has the Sound and is definately worth the buy.

Tales from the City is a solid second album from a band who deserves acclaim here in the USA. If you like this, also check out their first album Tomorrow Starts Today. It's definately worth the money; these guys from Montreal are the real deal.

Mobile:
Mat Joly - vocals
Christian "Criq" Brais - lead guitar
Frank Williamson - rhythm guitar
Dominic Viola - bass
Pierre-Marc Hameln - drums (Hameln has since left the band and has been replaced by Martin Lavallée)

A Good Album With Some GREAT Songs!

I purchased this album this morning based on the first single, "The Killer", which I heard on Sirius about a week ago. Overall the album is very good. It's got hints of indie and alt rock and reminds me of a younger, vibrant U2. While the album may be "good" there are a few GREAT songs on the album. First, the single "The Killer" is just that, killer. The sci-fi music video for it is much the same. My favorite song on the album is a more melodic one, "Dusting Down The Stars". It's a real heart tugger and would be perfect for many Hollywood movies. Overall the album is well worth the $10 and well worth several listens.
