iTunes Review

The Lemonheads’ Evan Dando has eclectic taste and he proves it with an album of covers that spans genres and artists you might not expect. Sure, a Gram Parsons cover — the obscure “I Just Can’t Take It Anymore” — or a Townes Van Zandt cover — “Waiting Around to Die” — are predictable, but who would guess shock-rocker G.G. Allin’s “Layin’ Up With Linda,” Christina Aguilera’s hit single “Beautiful,” and Arling and Cameron’s “Dirty Robot”? No matter how adventurous Dando turns in his choices, he strips nearly everything down to his own basic guitar-driven alterna-rock. Exceptions are “Dirty Robot” (with model Kate Moss), which retains a cheap synth romp, and “Dandelion Seeds,” which uses extensive wah-wah guitar. Wire’s “Fragile,” Randy Alvey & The Green Fuz’s garage rock classic “The Green Fuz,” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye,” with vocals from actress Liv Tyler, are all brought together with quiet, tasteful arrangements that make every song sound like it was written to be sung in front of the campfire. “The Green Fuz,” a tune originally based on a maniacal energy, now sounds like a psychedelic tribal ballad.

Is this a joke?

by GA JJ

Wow. I'm a huge Lemonheads and Evan Dando fan, but this is simply horrible. There's a big difference between Evan Dando + Julianna Hatfield and Evan Dando + Liv Tyler. I wish I'd never heard of this album. My only hope is than Evan Dando is actually brilliant and this is some kind of a joke, or spoof, like it's the Spinal Tap of the alt-acoustic rock genre...

Note to iTunes: when you sample a song, don't just sample the freakin' bridge.

Great Adaption of an Austin Punk Classic: "New Mexico"

by my_gd_it's_3_a.m._and_i'm_still_listening_to_this_new_music

“New Mexico” is mournful, melodic, and I can’t get it out of my head. The snippit on iTunes doesn’t do it justice---the pace builds up to a powerful chorus. Best song on the album. Redone from the original FuckEmos punk band song, “Mexico” this version transforms the ironic inflection into a haunting song. Think Johnny Cash, "Hurt."

“Beautiful” and “Dandelion Seeds” are also excellent. “Dirty Robot” is fun, flirty and completely out of sync with the heartrending humanity of the rest (but what can you expect from a Dirty Robot?).

Biography

Formed: 1986 in Boston, MA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

The Lemonheads' evolution from post-Hüsker Dü hardcore punk rockers to teenage heartthrobs is one of the strangest sagas in alternative music. Initially, the group was a punk-pop trio formed by three teenage Boston suburbanites, but over the years, the band became a vehicle for Evan Dando. Blessed with...
