iTunes Review

With Atlantic Crossing, Rod Stewart headed to America and hooked up with legendary Atlantic Records R&B producer Tom Dowd to set out and try a new attack of sleeker soul and pop-rock. The ‘70s were changing and it was time to replace the rough and tumble urgency of his folk-based hard rock with smoother rhythms, horns, and a brighter sound than his audience was used to. The 2009 Deluxe Edition includes the entire album presented in rougher, demo form, bringing back some of the toughness that producer Tom Dowd subdued on the final album. “Three Time Loser” cranks like an old Faces track. Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away” retains an exceptional grit. “This Old Heart of Mine” and “Still Love You” are yet more sweet Stewart soul ballads where the voice takes control of the situation. An exceptional bonus is the inclusion of a cover of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody,” Allen Toussaint’s “Holy Cow” and Otis Blackwell’s Elvis Presley hit “Return to Sender” recorded with Memphis’ MG’s backing Stewart for what would be their final time, as drummer Al Jackson was killed only months later.

Great Album

I love all of Rod Stewart's work. He is one of the few artist that can cover another artist and make it sound even better than the original. I'm a little confused though I thought his entire catalogue of studio albums had been rereleased and were all available here on iTunes I have downloaded all of them that are listed here today. I'm still missing the first four albums and Blondes Have More Fun. Weren't they on here last week? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks....

Pretty Good....

''Atlantic Crossing'' is not in the same class as his great ''Every Picture...'' or ''Never a Dull Moment'' discs. Considering he's not with his old band, Faces, on this release it still pretty good with a decent mix of rockers and ballads. Rod's cover of ''I Don't Want to Talk About It'' is outstanding,so if you're pressed for cash,at least get that one...

makes me want to be in the british navy

when this came out i was...12. and i understand the critical ragging. sure it would have been nice to have ronnie involved, but perhaps he was occupied. nevertheless, both atlantic crossing and a night on the town are classic, archetypal mid-seventies albums, and frankly as good or better than anything the stones put out at the time.
the ballads 'i don't want to talk about it', 'it's not the spotlight' 'this old heart of mine' and 'sailing' are the standouts, along with 'drift away.' granted, the rockers are tepid, and that reduces me to 4 stars. but the new tracks more than make up for the dip in rock quality control, particularly the booker t tracks. frankly, i never knew these existed. and the skye boat song is great for context, and it's a pity they left it off the original. warner brothers exec 1975: rod...baby...bagpipes? it'll freak people out...and the vibes are so... you know, soldiers and war. hate to break it to ya, rod, but we here in the states had this thing called...uh...vietnam. yeah, rod, it's too much of a bummer.

Biography

Born: January 10, 1945 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Rod Stewart may have begun his career as a respected singer, yet that critical respect eroded as he got older, as he became more concerned with stardom and adult contemporary songcraft than the rock music that launched him. While he has recorded some terrible albums — and he would admit that freely — Stewart was once rock & roll's best interpretive singer as well as an accomplished songwriter, creating a raw combination of folk, rock, blues, and country that sounded like no other...
