iTunes Review

"The Dandy Warhols Are Sound is comparable to a director’s cut version of a previously released film. In this case, the “movie” was first titled Welcome to the Monkey House, an ambitious if flawed work mixed by U.K. pop maven Peter Wheatley. Displeased with the results, the Dandys went back to the album’s original mixes, handled by New York hip-hop ace Russell Elavedo. In this form the tracks are crisper and more direct, trading day-glo colors for cooler underground tones. The overall vibe is akin to David Bowie’s late-‘70s Berlin phase, dominated by slinky metallic beats and svelte keyboard lines. Songs like “The Last High,” “Scientist” and “We Used to Be Friends” gain a teasing intimacy by allowing singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor more breathing room. If Monkey House highlighted the Dandy’s fascination with ‘80s synth-pop, the version of “Burned” included here points out their debt to the Velvet Underground. The newly released “Pete Int’l Spaceport” provides a woozy coda to the proceedings. If you like your hipster sounds dark and direct, this is the ""cut"" to buy."

the dandy warhols are go!

it's kind of no secret that the dandies have their own preferences for production - this version of the album makes a lot more sense when heard in the context of the rest of their canon (think dandys rule OK, the black album). more often than not, they go for a garage-y production, and "are sound" certainly highlights not only that but also more of their live sound. they're a tight band with loose sensibilities - i always suspected that "monkeyhouse's" mix was more capitol records than dandy warhols. don't get me wrong - i love both - but for different reasons. the mix of "scientist" is far better on "are sound." on "monkeyhouse" it was as if the producer totally missed the jist of the song. go dandies!

Ultimately better than Welcome to the Monkey House

The production here is different than many things I've heard by the Dandy Warhols. For that matter, I don't think I've heard many albums in general that have been mixed so precisely and subtley. At first this album sounds like a shittier, dinky version of Welcome to the Monkey House, an album that was basically 10 hard hitting pop numbers with a noise song and a couple of ditties. This album isn't nearly as in-your-face as that one, which may turn many people off. However, after listening to the Dandy Warhols Are Sound with some headphones and a relatively critical ear, it's been difficult to go back to Welcome to the Monkey House. Now, that album just sounds like a loud, muddy, digitized mess. Yeah, there isn't as much bass here, and the drums and guitars are much more subdued, but it just sounds way better.

The Dandy Warhols Are Fooling Themselves

I consider The Dandy Warhols the most amazing band since Duran and U2. That being said, the production of the their music on record has gone consistently downhill since the original Monkey House was released. The original version was fantastic,
and while having this mix is interesting, it certainly is nowhere near as compelling a sound. The production on Odditorium and Earth is muddy and dull with some tracks in need of severe editing, going on and on well past their expiration date. " I pray I pray " that this band returns to the sound they bestowed upon us faithful with the first three ( Black, 13 and Monkey) albums. Bring back Nick Rhodes or ask David Bowie to produce the next one please!

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Portland, OR

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Often compared to the druggy psychedelic pop of the Velvet Underground, the Dandy Warhols do possess more than just a passing resemblance to Lou Reed and company at times, but elements of such modern rockers as Love and Rockets and Ride can be detected in their sound as well. Formed in Portland, OR,...
