Up from Below is the remarkable debut by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, a 10-piece folk-rock band from Los Angeles. The songwriting and arrangements are epic, as guitars, piano, accordion, horns, and hand claps swirl together and build to big choruses and enthusiastic sing-alongs. The theatrical and cinematic delivery is reminiscent of late-‘60s hippiedom, yet it works without sounding contrived or clichéd because it’s done with such sincerity and verve. Lead singer Alex Ebert (formerly of Ima Robot) has a rich, soaring, and slightly raspy voice that brims with passion, and he’s supported by some wonderful backing singers that form a chorus similar to a large gospel group, giving the music a grand, sweeping sound and feel. The entire album is strong but “40 Day Dream,” “Up from Below,” and “Home” are among the best cuts and those most indicative of the depth, beauty, and positivity that permeates the release. This big band makes a big, joyous noise and Up from Below is a soulful and captivating debut.

by Scarlett953I first heard 'Home' on Gossip Girl (say what you want about the show, but the music is phenomenal), and since then I have been obsessed with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. I'm dying to see them live after I watched a video of the whole gang performing for NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series. They are amazing and strange and wonderful. The best description I've read of their music was a comment on the NPR video. Paraphrasing, it said something like "I needed this. I didn't know I did, but I did. Thank you." Exactly.
