A jittery, relentless mood animates the tracks on Armistice, MuteMath’s sophomore album. If the Christian-rooted quartet’s debut album displayed an unusual degree of rhythmic sophistication, this release pushes the grooves into almost avant garde territory, inviting comparisons with the Talking Heads’ Remain In Light for sheer boldness. Armistice veers from the spongy, dub-like throb of “Backfire” to the ominous military trudge of “Burden” and the choppy, high-gloss funk of the title tune, embellishing its beats with pulsating synths and stabbing guitar lines. Singer Paul Meany fully embraces his role as a dance-floor prophet, probing at modern spiritual maladies in “The Nerve” and “No Response.” The softer moments here are surprisingly effective; “Pins and Needles” has a languid jazz feel, while “Lost Year” dispenses with electronica trappings in favor of piano balladry. The kinetic “Spotlight” — used to telling effect on the Twilight film soundtrack — sums up the barrier-challenging spirit of the album.

Picking a fight with Armistice
by ZeroNerveI can't tell if it's the band's creative direction that has pushed their production into snap, crackle and over-produced tech pop, or if they simply had the wrong producer. If Mute Math is to defend the creative stake they've placed in the ground with their first live disc—and the stake that garnered them the attention of thousands of listeners bored with new bands—they absolutely must figure out a way to recover the energy of their live performances on future records. Mute Math is unreal live! But Armistice is a collection of disheartening songs with excellent musicianship mottled by zealous production decisions. The live show's redeeming quality was that they couldn't pull off all the twinkets, cracklipops and audio gizmotics of the record. I fell in love with Flesh and Bones Live at first listen, and I thought this band is bound to make 20+ great records, but I barely liked this material until seeing the Armistice tour.
Mute Math, I still love you, and I loved Armistice live, but I don't love your Armistice record. And next time, I pray you have something hopeful to say.
I'd pay $100 to hear what came out of the tracking sessions before the producer touched anything.
Rock On Men!!
by MooseMaker007I have been listening to this album for almost a month now and I love it. MuteMath has been one of my all time favorite bands, and I plan to follow them forever. I love the way they added to their sound, but it still sounds like them; they have not lost there original sound.
i cant Resist Armistice!
by crankit782From what i previously heard of Mute Math, i wasnt very impressed by them. but, when my mom bought their new album, Armistice, and after i heard them in concert i was in LOVE. I could listen to this album all day long and never tire of it....it is one of those albums were EVERY song is a good one...and even if its not one to sing along with it is great background music to listen to while working or driving around, especially with all their cool electronic and violin effects.
