iTunes Review

David Gray began his career as an acoustic guitar-wielding Van Morrison acolyte, wresting existential angst from a whirring loop of simple chords and aching vocal jumps. Over the years, he’s found his voice with a tight, unobtrusive backing band that flirts with early-‘70s soft rock while occasionally spiking up the electricity with an extra warm guitar chord. The title track here perfectly demonstrates what Gray does best. The chords in the bridge head towards pending doom only to be rescued by the contemplative and gentle acoustic picking that sets up things for Gray’s emotional but never overwhelmed delivery. Gray often trades the guitar for piano these days where the elliptical chords make their reappearance for “Jackdaw” and provide the backdrop for his duet with Jolie Holland on “Kathleen” and his pensive rumination (“Transformation”). Gray’s toned-down approach has him landing somewhere between Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne. “Stella the Artist” kicks up the tempo, while his closing duet with Annie Lennox sounds quite passionate and tense.

keeps getting better

by jmanyc21

This album keeps getting better and even after listening through dozens of times its hard to say what the best songs are. As a whole it flows perfect and is as close to white ladder in terms of quality as david gray has given us in years.

Nemesis is a special song and might be the early highlight. Jackdaw is as solid as they come and songs like transformation, kathleen & harder are all vintage david gray.

Finally, you are selling yourself short if you dont buy the deluxe version. If anyone has seeen David Gray they know how amzing live he is. With that said, there's not much live david gray on i-tunes and I hope this is a sign of things to come. Buy it for the live version of Nightblindness alone.

Enjoy

Not a bad song on the album...

David still sounds great, lyrics still meaningful, and I really like the two duet tracks. The one with Annie Lennox is simple, driving, and powerful. I've been listening over and over, can't wait to see him next month.

Solid, but nothing mind blowing

Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable album. It's got solid songs, with nice melodies, and as always David Gray is very talented with a powerful voice. However, if you're looking for his best work, you have to go with White Ladder. This is good, but can't touch that album.
