iTunes Review

San Francisco’s Thao Nguyen is one of those singers who can get two or three syllables from words like “have,” without sounding like a Nashville wannabe or a kid with hiccups. As on last year’s We Brave Bee Stings And All , her style is spirited and robust, and even the gentler, breezy tracks, like “The Give” and “Oh No,” are hardier than most. Songs ache with longing, love and lust, and when she sings, “bring your hips to me,” “I think I could burn you up,” or “I disarm you in the morning,” her straightforwardness is downright sexy. Thao and her two bandmates (on bass and drums) adorn the intimate moments with shy strings, pedal steel guitar and spare arrangements, while her more exuberant expressions swing and cha-cha with guitars, keyboards, horns and hand percussion. (“I don’t get to leave, ‘cause you left first,” she trills on “Easy,” while layers of chirping vocals and a bouncing rhythm section skip along.) The whole set is superb. Thao’s recording with the Portland Cello Project (The Portland Cello Project: The Thao and Justin Power Sessions) is well worth seeking out as well.

AZ for Thao

Thao performed last night at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. Let me tell you, she is a really nice down to earth person. Her presence is soothing and her performance is captivating. While she sings and strikingly plays the guitar she has this ability to keep you in the moment of each song. She is very comical which keeps her audience on a mutual level when she pauses after each song. The best songs I enjoy the most from her new album would be "Easy" and "Body". They are very artistic, both lyrics and guitar melodies. Buy her album and enjoy the music.

This record is great. I would recommend a song, but I like the whole album. Catchy and concise. You will return to these songs often.

Rivals "Bee Stings" in Awesomeness. Easily earns

by Christoph Sullivan

Refreshing is an understatement. This is not an optional album to have, it's mandatory. Thao Nguyen with the Get Down Stay Down have delivered another masterpiece that no other artist can come close too. We Brave Bee Stings & All, the previous album, set the bar, and Know Better Learn Faster (though apparently missing a comma) raises that bar higher. You don't know good music until this album has entered your ears.
