iTunes Review

As the shadowy architect behind Pavement, lurking while singer Stephen Malkmus cranked up through sheer indifference the ironic slacker prince persona, Scott Kannberg (a.k.a. Spiral Stairs) was responsible for much of the band’s ramshackle sound. His post-punk roots displayed a great fandom for Mark E. Smith and the Fall. But this first Spiral Stairs solo album (previous post-Pavement work was released as Preston School of Industry) is a surprising mesh of styles many genres away from the sound of the mighty Pavement. “True Love” opens things with a rock star’s swagger. But much of the album has a country-rock tone. “Call the Ceasefire,” “Cold Change,” “A Mighty, Mighty Fall” and “Blood Money” are odd country-rock with their lagging western lopes complimenting Kannberg’s comforting drawl. “Wharf Hand Blues” shuffles with the rocker blues of Johnny Thunders, Chuck Prophet or Paul K. “Subiaco Shuffle” and “Stolen Pills” are more in line with expectations as they’re propelled by modern day garage rock and more discordant electric guitars with the raspy vocals to match.

As most who will buy this album, I am an extreme Pavement fan. Growing up, it was Malkmus!!! Malkmus!!! Malkmus!!!, and for great purpose. Kennel District, Date W/ Ikea, Coolin By Sound, Stub Your Toe, ect. played as big a role in my Pavement appreciation as any Malkmus penned tunes. I could never compare, like picking a favorite child, but Scott's songs, even as infrequent as they may have been, had just a big a part in the Pavement legacy (at least to myself). With the PSOI albums 'Goodbye to the Edge City' and 'All This Sounds A Gas', it was the Scott from Pavement I always enjoyed, without restriction. But, with 'Monsoon' he really started to seperate himself, which he deserves. With 'The Real Feel', he is Spiral Stairs, not Scott from Pavement anymore. Wonderful album. 'True Love' is not my favorite Spiral song, but it is his 'best' song yet. Pleasing to the masses. 'Cool Change', 'Call to Cease Fire', all the songs are very good. My 18 month old daughter loves 'Maltese T', and we have white person danced to it every morning since I discovered it on Scott's Myspace page. If you're considering, please buy the album, totally worth it. Plus, I'm sure he needs the money, and the more we buy, the more east i hope he will come.

Simply great

I was slightly hesitent thinking that this might be an album trying to lure people in with the idea that this might be a branch off of a pavement album but Spiral has done nothing of the sort. Sure you can here the tones of the former band but with this album Spiral is making more of a name for himself. I listened from front to back without any hesitation and never had any thoughts of skipping a song. Give it a shot you wont be disappointed.
