Album Review
The Fall of Troy do a bunch of different things, most of them with reasonable competence and a strong enough individual identity to vault them a half-step ahead of the pack. The first song on this disc, "Panic Attack," is very much in the jagged post-punk spirit of At the Drive-In, including high-pitched vocals à la Cedric Bixler-Zavala. But that's followed by the noisy post-hardcore of "Straight-Jacket Keelhauled," which could almost be a Converge cover with its feedback-laced riff, distorted screams, and relentless headlong pace. At other times, vocalist Thomas Erak sounds shockingly like Coheed and Cambria's Claudio Sanchez; indeed, if "Single" had a much longer and dumber title and an epic, arena-rock guitar solo, it could be a Coheed and Cambria track. The noises that begin "Dirty Pillow Talk," plus the convulsive guitar-and-drum spasm that passes for a riff, make it one of the most interesting, if not necessarily palatable, songs on the album. Overall, these guys are obviously young enough that they're still working through their influences, but they have enough instrumental technique and a few good ideas of their own that they'll eventually turn into something memorable after another album or two down the road. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi

In the Unlikely Event: A full review
The evolution of FoT over the years has been nothing short of exceptional. They have come so far from their first Ghostship Recordings while still retaining the unique edge that makes them so irresistible.
) The new album opens up with Panic Attack! which is in stark contrast to Cut the Trees Down and Name the Streets After Them, the first song on their last album. Right away one can tell they have really refined their sound, and have structured their music much more which serves as a great balance to the emotional outpour they gave us in Phantoms on the Horizons.
) That is not to say they have lot their intensity as right into Straight-Jacket Keelhauled they make sure we don't forget what makes them Hardcore. A great song, with great screaming this is definitely not a single, but its one of the songs that appeals to their more intense fan base.
) FoT is great for their ability to creating extremely unique musical productions, and Battleship Graveyard is definitely a testament to their ability to weave create musical styling’s with haphazard screaming to create something truly beautiful. Battleship Graveyard is a great song, but its not going to be the song you buy the album for. This song covers their whole emotional spectrum with great alternation in speed, style, rhythm and vocals.
) A Classic Case of Transference captures yours ears right off the bat and it really highlights FoT's ability to create quirky yet catchy songs. With substantially less screaming than their traditional songs, CCoT is a prominent example of how the FoT has no reservation exploring new veins of music, and of striking gold. A great song that has merit in itself and it worth checking out even if you don't get the album.
) Single is a good song in the context of the album and is a perfect example of the continuity that is present in FoT's album's. It keeps you listening, and it keeps you questioning what will come next, but despite its name it is not Single worthy. This is a good song, but it will not be what the album is known for.
) As Empty the Clip... starts to play you realize that FoT is definitely the group of kids thrashing away in obscurity attempting to make a name for themselves. This is a testament as to how composed the band actually is, and its rhythmic melody forces your head to bob along with the tune even if it’s not the FoT that you expected. The obvious lack of intensity stands out in contrast to what previous FoT albums would have us expect, but that is not to say this is not a good song.
) On first glance I thought this was going to be a song that I would listen to in the context of the album and nothing more, but People and Their Lives is a great example of the musical genius that this band possesses. The title is very misleading because what makes this song so great is the music, which greatly overshadows the vocals. Catchy lyrics as sprinkled in which really help bring out the song, but they are definitely supplementary. Especially in the last two minutes the song builds up into something that is nothing short of great. Worth getting in itself.
) Dirty Pillow Talk is not the best song, but it’s a nice view of what old FoT was more like. It is a refreshing change in the context of the album, but it is not what the album will be known for.
) At first glance Nobody's Perfect can be overlooked, and from the beginning of the song it seems to be just another In the Unlikely Event song; creative music of course, but nothing exceptional. This is very misleading because the dark undertones that randomly surface make a full on appearance a little more than half way through the song. This emotional explosion is a great example of how genuine FoT can be and how it will redefine Hardcore through its process of expression.
) Webs show a more emotional side of FoT, which makes your reminiscent of Quarter Past from Manipulator. It shows how FoT can still make great music without blasting your ears away with a hundred different sounds. Good song.
) I love Walk of Fame. I may be in the minority of the audience in saying this but I feel that this will be a very popular song among traditional FoT listeners. It’s a great example of what FoT has too offer, and that being said it one of the most difficult songs to characterize. They are really all over the place but in a great way. Any adjectives would fail to describe the perpetual transitions of the songs; in my mind this is a song worth getting in itself.
) FoT makes sure to go out on a strong note; it really brings the album together well. Nature Vs. Nurture is not the best song, but it is perfect in context of the album. It makes sure you leave the album on a good note, and the oscillation between upbeat rhythm and more pseudo-tranquility sets the stage perfect for a brilliant part about 3:30 into the song. I won't ruin it, but in my mind this merits specific attention.
The Fall of Troy is a band that never disappoints in my opinion. Whether this album is the greatest work is debatable, and only time will tell. It really shows how the FoT is never complacent in their production value, but they are constantly striving for new sounds and new veins of expression. Much like Manipulator the beauty of the album is truly beheld when listening to it through and through. That being said there are some songs that would be single worthy, but this album is definitely worth the price. It is something that you will not readily bore with after listening, and you will force yourself to listen to over and over again. FoT is a band that keeps evolving and that’s why it’s important to listen to In the Unlikely Event with an open ear. It provides a fresh new sound to a classic band, and like always they never disappoint!
"We play what we like"
I've seen mixed reviews on this album so far. Some people accept it because it's the fall of troy, some legitimately like the new material along with the stuff that resembles the old material. Some think they're going in an alt rock direction and want the old stuff back. Each oppinion has it's legitimacy, but I think those who are ready to write off the new material aren't looking deep enough into what these guys or doing. Yeah, doppleganger and manipulator were interesting when they came out, but here's the thing, those riffs, those vocals, they're tired and done. Do you really want to hear the same things over and over? You can only survive on a sound for so long.
Honnestly, I think the weakest point of this album is the stuff that sounds more like their older material. There are some instances where the riffs just sound a little recycled. I love all the stuff on this album, but really, the point at which I really start to dig the album is the last half. I actually love Staight Jacket Keelhauled, and panic attack, but Ghostship Graveyard and A Classic case, while good, just are way too middle ground.
If you don't like the new material, then so be it. If the fall of tro continue to develop their sound this way then most likely the FOT era will end in another album for you. If you're loving the album, like I am, hopefully your'e already excited for whatever comes next because however "tame" or "generic" it sounds, there is some sick intricate stuff going on.
Letdown.
I got this cd a couple days before it came out, and listening to it over and over hasn't caused me to like it any more. it lacks the true hardcore fall of troy. it sounds very generic. thomas erak's voice sounds almost boring, while in doppelganger, the unpredictable songwriting by the fall of troy kept listeners guessing. all in all, the fall of troy seems to just be losing their grip on good music.
