iTunes Review

From a duo who once titled an album Quiet Is the New Loud, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their 2009 release, Declaration of Dependence, continues in the same laid-back vein as their last release five years previous, 2004’s Riot On an Empty Street. These two gents from Bergen, Norway live in their own space and time where a bossanova like “Mrs. Cold” flows beautifully into another bossanova “Me In You” — the album is packed with bossanovas — before emptying into “Boat Behind,” a gentle string-fed tune that brightens their harmonies for the moment. Comparisons to Simon and Garfunkel, while frequent, don’t quite capture what these young men have here. Yes, there’s the “dependence” declared in their album title manifesting in their harmonies, and the finger-picking leading the way of “Rule My World” creates a co-dependent weave reminiscent of many folkie duos. But the Kings have a sound that seems to emanate from another faraway place no matter how quiet and intimate the recording. Even something as soft and purring as “My Ship Isn’t Pretty” threatens to sail away out of reach.

Finally!

I was expecting it to be just another fruitless random search but was ecstatic when I noticed that the Kings of Convenience came out with a new album... its been a LONG time, too long. Once again, beautifully melancholy and hopefully it ages as fine as their two previous albums I have... why shouldn't it?

The Kings do it again!

The best way to descibe this new release from the Kings of Convenience is musical bliss. A definite rainy day -- sitting in your favourite cafe album. Simple compositions, yet thought provoking and strangely complex at the same time. How do these guys do it? They've been likened to a modern-day Simon and Garfunkel. True, but they also have a little Chad and Jeremy or Peter and Gordon as well. In other words, they are in good company. If you are a fan of the other King's albums, this is yet another must-have. What's more, they continue to produce original sounding music in a time when so many bands sound alike. Listen in good health.

This album, and just like the past albums, is a must have. The Kings yet again create another brilliant grouping of songs that envoke so many feelings of happiness and sadness. The Kings are one of the very few present-day singer/songwriter groups that have thier own authenticy
