Album Review

Jon Bon Jovi's first official solo album, Destination Anywhere (apparently Blaze of Glory doesn't count because it was a soundtrack) finds the hard rocker attempting to simultaneously make his signature sound more mature and more contemporary. Producer Stephen Lironi tones down the sample-driven rhythms that characterized his work with Black Grape, giving Bon Jovi a laid-back and modern musical bed. Of course, the singer chooses to write melodies and lyrics very similar to those of his full-time band, only less bombastic. And that's the key to Destination Anywhere — it really couldn't have been made by the band, because there are too many subtle sonics and melodies for the group. So, in a sense, it's a breakthrough for Bon Jovi, because it is the first time he sounds like he's come to terms with adulthood. That doesn't mean Destination Anywhere is a complete success — it, like his other records, is hampered by filler — but none of his contemporaries were able to age this well, and the record is a fine example of late-'90s mainstream pop.

Single Jon

Great album, but if you are looking for a few good songs to have a taste, then choose Queen of New Orleans, Midnight in Chelsea, Destination Anywhere, and August 7.

Takes awhile to adjust from whole band to solo

Once I really got into Bon Jovi's 80s music through the Crush album, I was really curious with this album if he could handle solo without Richie. (Those two harmonize incredibly well together.) First time I heard it, I guess I really didn't give it a chance to sink in. My spouse continued to play it and now it is one of my favorite albums. These Days is my favorite Bon Jovi album, but of all the bands of that time period Destination is probably one of the better. "Midnight in Chelsea" and "Learning How to Fall" have great slower rythyms. "Queen of New Orleans", "Ugly", and "Naked" are great relaxing, but have catchy beats. And my favorite off the album is "Staring at your Window....Hand" The others are good too, but those I think are the better of them. For his first solo project on the side from his band's "vacation", it shows his talent alone as well. Just don't expect the Hair Band type stuff from the 80s.

good but could be better

what he could do is redo a these songs with the whole band because its just not the same without Richie Sambora playin the gutairs
