Album Review

If you'd asked a hypothetical leading hip-hop expert what the main difference between East Coast and West Coast rappers was in the early '90s, he might have explained that the West was more interested in beats and grooves, while the Northeast was concerned with rapping technique. Well respected in New York rap circles, Chubb Rock had plenty of technique — something there's no shortage of on The One. The album leaves no doubt that his rapping skills are first-rate, but technique only carries Rock so far. Although decent and at times exhilarating, The One isn't a great album. Rock (who often incorporates dancehall reggae) is at his best on excellent message songs like "What's the Word" and "The Night Scene," an arresting description of the horrors that surround drugs. But his boasting raps wear thin after a while. Rock has the chops; it's his lyrics that aren't always memorable.

I managed to find all the remixes for the Chubbster, including the clubby Clarks_Smooth_Haus remix. I do wish they were here...been looking for that track for years.

I am not reviewing Chubb Rock, however, The iTunes reviewer needs to get his/her mind right. The claim that Hip-Hop in the Northeast was not concerned with beats/grooves as compared to the west coast in the early 90's is laughable & simply wrong. While the G-Funk sound was indeed groovy and novel (and blew up commercially), to disregard contemporary albums from artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Diamond D, & Digable Planets (just to name a few) ignores classic, important, timeless hip-hop beats.

One of most talented and underated Mc's of all time. We know the Rakims, Jay Z's, Nas's, Biggie Smalls, Enemim's Big Daddy Kane's...you got my drift. The Chubbster had intricate rhyme patterns that he made sound easy over hot gravy beats, which is a must to be a great Mc. There ain't too many that were as talented as Chubb Rock, too bad he did'nt get the credit he deserved.
