iTunes Review
“Smoke on the Water” sets the gold standard for hard rock guitar riffs. And the song itself — the centerpiece of the band’s finest album, 1972’s Machine Head — remains a chilling story of the night the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert. Yet, the album is much more than what rests in its grooves. Alongside fellow countrymen, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was defining the role of the hard rock / heavy metal guitarist for decades to come. Purple’s instrumental prowess emphasized the interplay between Blackmore’s savage rhythms and Jon Lord’s stately organ that sounded like a church service being hijacked by a group of rebellious teenaged stoners. Singer Ian Gillan defined the piercing heavy metal wail that would find further voice with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal stars, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and definitive Purple tracks such as “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin’” still buckle with stunning momentum.

Buy This Album. No Excuses.
Machine Head is one of the greatest rock albums ever. A must have album for metal heads and rock fans alike! Every single track on this album is not only exceptional, but a rock standard and the raw power and technical brilliance that this album displays is like no other album. The Itunes review covers well the individual skill of the players; Ritchie Blackmore, who has the creative skill, if not the technical skill of Jimmy Page; John Lord, best rock organist ever, sorry Pigpen; and Ian Gillian, who is Robert Plant's equal if not his better.
However, Itunes fails to give credit to Rodger Glover, who is an incredible metal bassist. Being a bassist myself, I tend to give more attention to the low end and Rodger Glover rewards well those who listen to him closely. His technical skill and speed are incredible. His solo in Pictures of Home is awesome and his lines throughout Highway Star are what give the song its intensity and complexity. He is a master of making Deep Purple’s songs much more dynamic with his lines, creating a great dynamic effect that is often lost in the metal genre.
Basically, this album rocks like no other.
Enough said.
