iTunes Review

“Smoke on the Water” sets the gold standard for hard rock guitar riffs. And the song itself — the centerpiece of the band’s finest album, 1972’s Machine Head — remains a chilling story of the night the Grand Hotel in Montreux, Switzerland burned to the ground during a Frank Zappa concert. Yet, the album is much more than what rests in its grooves. Alongside fellow countrymen, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was defining the role of the hard rock / heavy metal guitarist for decades to come. Purple’s instrumental prowess emphasized the interplay between Blackmore’s savage rhythms and Jon Lord’s stately organ that sounded like a church service being hijacked by a group of rebellious teenaged stoners. Singer Ian Gillan defined the piercing heavy metal wail that would find further voice with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal stars, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and definitive Purple tracks such as “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin’” still buckle with stunning momentum.

Classic Classic Rock

I had thought I wasn't all that familiar with this bunch of songs, but everything here is ver familiar and pretty uniformly great. Don't look for meaning here, look for a beer swillin' good time. You've heard Smoke on the Water a million times, sure, but there's always time for one more listen to Highway Star, and Space Truckin' is a colossal hoot, too. What is Ian saying in the last line?

THIS WHOLE CD ROCKS! NO BAD SONGS

by xxx9913

everyone in deep purple is an amazing musician. ritchie blackmore is the master of the sick guitar riff, ian gillan is one of the only singers to even come close to robert plant, and jon lord is the greatest rock organist ever but the FAR underated rhythm section is equally good. roger glover is a solid bass player, and ian paice is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time with some of the fastest chops around.
Anyway about the songs:

Highway Star: DANGER DO NOT PLAY WHILE DRIVING: YOU WILL START SPEEDING- incredible song although the guitar solo in the made in japan version blows this one away. if you like this be sure to check out made in japan which is one of the best live cds ever
Maybe I'm a Leo: not the best but still pretty sick-cool riff throughout the song
Pictures of Home: good solid rock
Never Before: some nasty bass playing-highly underrated song
Smoke on the Water: obviously the most well known song and although i dont think it is their best song it is still amazing
Lazy: my favorite on this cd-amazing playing on all instruments
Space Truckin: Another awesome riff. the closing screams by gillan put him right up at the top near robert plant.

Anyway buy this whole cd-NOT JUST SMOKE ON THE WATER-and you will find yourself headbanging in no time.

A Fine Piece of Work

What an amazing work of art. Truly a masterpiece of a fantastic band. What breaks my heart is that the song "Lazy" is so underrated. It is one of my favorite songs and I'm trying to learn it on guitar, harmonica, and keyboard, with good success. But I can listen to the entire album over and over again, still being captivated by new things that I notice. Musically brilliant...2 thumbs up!
