Album Review

Stevie Nicks' solo career was off to an impressive, if overdue, start with Bella Donna, which left no doubt that she could function quite well without the input of her colleagues in Fleetwood Mac (a band she would remain a member of until 1993). The album yielded a number of hits that seemed omnipresent in the '80s, including the moving "Leather and Lace" (which unites Nicks with Don Henley), the poetic "Edge of Seventeen," and her rootsy duet with Tom Petty, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." But equally engaging are less exposed tracks like the haunting "After the Glitter Fades." Hit producer Jimmy Iovine wisely avoids over-producing, and keeps things sounding organic on this striking debut.

All alone on the edge of seventeen.

Stevie Nicks is one of my favourite artists, and this album, definitely lives up ( and goes beyond) the standards set by her work with Fleetwood Mac. This album, I know, is mostly remembered for Leather and Lace and Edge of Seventeen. While they are both great songs, there are many other worthwhile songs on the album. I would recommend How Still My Love, Bella Donn, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, and After The Glitter Fades.

Stevie Nicks' debut has proved that she can really stand on her own without Fleetwood Mac. With great featured artists such as Don Henley, and my favorite, Tom Petty, I knew that this album was sure to be good. The production was definitely on point with the lyrics. I hear Edge of Seventeen everywhere, and Leather and Lace is on the radio a lot; so I know that this album has stood the test of time. Sometimes I forget that this album came out in 1981, because there are still so many traces in this early 80's album. This is a must-have for any record collector.
