iTunes Review

The Cars drove out of Boston with an exciting debut album that immediately established them as one of New Wave’s most promising bands. Their pop hooks were undeniable and “Just What I Needed,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” and “Let the Good Times Roll” are among the six tracks from that debut featured here that point up all the band’s immediate strengths — their tightly packed harmonies, their space-age, yet melodic synthesizer lines, and guitars that cut through traffic with exact precision. Their subsequent albums would jigger the formula a bit, leading to more catchy pop (“Let’s Go,” “It’s All I Can Do”), further studio experimentation (“Touch and Go”), more radio-friendly pop for the ‘80s (“Shake It Up,” “You Might Think”) and the perfect melodramatic ballad (“Drive”). Through six albums, the Cars defined and refined an era, balancing between careful polished productions that gave them an extra sheen and the emotional turmoil that lurked beneath the hood in the pained expressions of songwriter Ric Ocasek and the smoother, stylish vocal turns of the late Ben Orr.

The Cars always made great albums.

Benjamin Orr Deserves More Credit

The Cars were a phenomenal band. Their debut has to be considered one of the best rock albums ever. This collection reflects that with six songs from the self titled debut. Unfortunately their best song, All Mixed Up, has been left off this collection which is a terrible mistake. Other reviews mentioned that Ben Orr was the bassist and has passed away far too soon. Both statements are true, however, it should also be noted that he was the best singer in this band. Ric Ocasek was called the lead singer and became super popular after he walked on water in the Magic video and buzzed around as a fly in the You Might Think video. But the best songs were sung by Ben. Among them were Just What I Needed, Bye Bye Love, Moving in Stereo, All Mixed Up, Its All I Can Do, Drive, Lets Go to name just a few. While Ric had a quirky voice that meshed well with the band, Ben was the true singer. Its too bad that most people think Ric sang their favorite Cars songs when in reality it was most likely Ben.

Hail 80's Rock

They were the ultimate 80's band with the best music videos to boot. Remember " you might think " Winners of the first Mtv video awards. I will always be a fan. Greg Hawkes is a genius and perhaps the most talented of the 5. Listen to his subtle but iconic fills and beautiful electronic notes in all of their songs. Amazing!! The Cars rule!

Years Active: '70s, '80s

Blondie may have had a string of number one hits and Talking Heads may have won the hearts of the critics, but the Cars were the most successful American new wave band to emerge in the late '70s. With their sleek, mechanical pop/rock, the band racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles...
