iTunes Review

Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan grew up in the 1970s when his favorite bands released double live albums and ambitious concept albums, and were given free reign to concoct whatever they pleased in the recording studio. Corgan came up through the Indie-rock ranks that spied such ambition with trepidation, swearing allegiance to the bare bones economy of quick, first thought-best thought execution. But having established himself with his group’s second album, Siamese Dream, Corgan decided to use his considerable good fortune and influence and push the acceptable boundaries of alternative rock with this 28-track collection. From its piano intro through its myriad of moods — the orchestral tones of “Tonite, Tonite,” the churning groove of “Here Is No Why,” the whiny petulance of “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” the highway New Wave motoring of “1979” — Mellon Collie is a progressive rock fan’s dream, obsessive on detail and painstakingly worked over. Corgan’s voice isn’t for everyone, but the guitar textures are a headphone user’s welcomed indulgence. The album simply sounds amazing and delivers on many of its creator’s grand ambitions.

Awesome!!

by hi my name is @#&%$(

This is a great album!! The first disc offers all solid songs, while the second disc has the ups and downs of the album. There are only 3 bad tracks Tales Of a Scorched Earth, 1979, and X.Y.U. The best track is Thru the Eyes of a Ruby. But there are many good tracks.

One of the Best from the 90's. I had a ZERO shirt, and saw the SP 2 times...lol. They were one of the most instrumental bands in my young adult life….great memories!

Such a great mix up hard rock and symphonic progressive rock. To bad they never quit reach this kind of song writing afterwards, although Adore and Machina are pretty solid albums.

Corgan at his best

Out of all the rest of the albums, this one tops them all. Out of all the singlesmy favorite is tonight, tonight. As for my favorite out of the non-singles, its jellybelly. Most hardcore goes to X.Y.U and my favorite out of the most emotional songs is to forgive. The whole albums great :D

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early '90s, the Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock.
