iTunes Review

The darlings of Athens, Georgia may not have single-handedly pushed college rock to the forefront of '80s pop, but it's hard to imagine it happening without them. And when this 1987 album yielded not only the ironic, uncharacteristically upbeat fave "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)," but also the band's first bona fide Top Ten pop hit with the bittersweet ballad "The One I Love." Producer Scott Litt's subtle mainstreaming of the band's sound here is an obvious plus. But it is the willingness of creative mainstays Peter Buck and Michael Stipe to tinker ambitiously with the band's sonic ethos, pushing it beyond the jangly, often lyrically opaque formula into more emotionally compelling territory that help Document pay its richest dividends. Other key tracks: "Finest Worksong," "King of Birds"

My first R.E.M. record

I recently picked up R.E.M.'s greatest hits CD and found myself back in time. When I heard Finest Worksong, it brought back great memories for me from 1987 at the 'tender' age of 20. Back then, I was into hard rock (VH, Rush, Aerosmith, etc) and I had no idea who R.E.M. really were. I'm 42 now, and after listening to that song, I found out it came from 'Document'. I immediately purchased this CD, and I cannot BELIEVE what I had missed back then! I have listened to this CD many times over and I still find something new in the the songwriting, arrangements, etc. There is not one song on this CD that I don't like and I have no favorites. R.E.M.'s music from the 80's fills my ipod now. I have all their CD's from the 80's, but this one CD is my absolute favorite. My 2 1/2 yr old son likes this CD too! His favorites are Exhuming McCarthy, with the poppy beat, and Disturbance (their gathering the monkeys). He's probably R.E.M.'s youngest fan!

Am I the only REM fan who thinks DOCUMENT is a concept album? Maybe it wasn't intended to be one, but I have always found in this, my personal favorite of REM's many great albums, a very strong, coherent storyline. The opening calls to revolution (Finest Worksong, Welcome to the Occupation) lead to political backlash and violence (Exhuming McCarthy, Disturbance at the Heron House), culminating in the apocalypse itself (Strange, It's the End...). After the collapse of society we experience the breakdown of love (The One I Love), anarchy (Fireplace, Lightnin' Hopkins), and tyranny both political (King of Birds) and, most terrifying of all, religious (Oddfellows Local 151) which suggests a dark age to follow. My theory may be completely off-base, but even if Michael Stipe himself were to tell me so, I would still interpret this album in those terms, so natural and appropriate do they seem to me.

End of the World

If you like the song It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine try the DC Talk version on the 1997 realese Welcome to the Freakshow.

R.E.M. mark the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought...
