iTunes Review

The Kinks went through many phases throughout their long career and by 1977 found themselves walking into the arena rock era with a perfect arsenal of old hits to compliment the scene. “You Really Got Me” was always the original powerchord riff, so to hear it here performed live with an extra layer of guitar distortion makes perfect sense, while a live version of “Lola” also benefits from the crowd’s warm enthusiasm. This decade of change saw the Kinks rebound with a number of worthwhile hits, from “Come Dancing,” “Low Budget,” the disco edit of ”(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman” and “Catch Me Now I’m Falling” to the clever rewrite of “All Day and All of the Night” that became “Destroyer.” Ray Davies is in perfect nostalgia mode for the chiming “Better Things” and the non-LP single “Father Christmas,” and while no Kinks fan would want to be without their earlier hits (and hardcore Kinks fans insist on seeking out their mostly undiscovered album tracks and oddities for the best representation of the group), the Kinks managed to revive themselves quite nicely for their final run.

the real Kinks fans are in their 50's and 60's . . . . . . . . they can read "Lola (Live)", and therefore won't buy it . . . . . . instead we'll burn it off disc . . . .

Good Thinking!

by Astron Argon

"Why don't we put out a greatest hits album of the worst era of one of the greatest bands of all time, so everyone thinks that one of the greatest bands of all time is absolutely awful and terrible!"
"Sounds great, Johnson! You know, I'm starting to think there might be a promotion in the works for you, if you catch my drift."
"I'm afraid I don't."
"Don't what?"
"Catch your drift..."
"Well, then you're fired!"

Looking for Lola

This album could be bumped up to 4 stars if they just had a studio version of Lola. Why is it so hard to find a studio version of Lola on iTunes?

Although they weren't as boldly innovative as the Beatles or as popular as the Rolling Stones or the Who, the Kinks were one of the most influential bands of the British Invasion. Like most bands of their era, the Kinks began as an R&B/blues outfit. Within four years, the band had become the most...
