Album Review

James Taylor's seventh album and last new recording for Warner Bros. is notable for producing his biggest self-written hit in four years, "Shower the People" (number 22 pop, number one easy listening). Bobby Womack's "Woman's Gotta Have It" was the album's only cover, and elsewhere Taylor took on a surprisingly rough set of issues in his typically gentle style, including "A Junkie's Lament" and "Money Machine." There were also reflections on being a "Family Man" even if, due to his peripatetic touring life, "Daddy's All Gone." Guest stars included Art Garfunkel, who harmonized on "Captain Jim's Drunken Dream," and Stevie Wonder, who co-wrote and played harmonica on "Don't Be Sad 'Cause Your Sun Is Down." On the whole, a respectable effort for an artist who was evolving into more of a craftsman than a virtuoso.

Some Golden Moments

While I wouldn't call this a great album, it certainly contains some great songs. Slow Burning Love, Capt. Jim's Drunken Dream, Don't Be Sad..., and Golden Moments are all lyrically and musically beautiful. The rest... well it is James Taylor, so it's gonna be pretty good anyway.

A beautifully crafted record

by BwanaEast

The follow-up and a perfect companion piece to the more popular Gorilla, this is a beautifully crafted (though somewhat overlooked) pop record. Shower the People has become one of James' most enduring classics, but what is most striking about this record is the depth and sheer beauty of so many of the songs that no one seems to know. The soulful and poignant Daddy's All Gone could have been recorded by Otis Redding, while A Junkie's Lament, Don't Be Sad, Captain Jim's Dream and Slow Burning Love are four of the most gorgeous
tracks James ever cut.

classic jt

by lrbchris

this is classic jt: fighting for sobriety, fighting to be a better father, fighting to save a marriage - all the while taking the time to chronicle the journey musically and lyrically. we are fortunate to have the opportunity to journey with this genious. he enlists so many of the greats talents of this era on this project - Stevie Wonder, dave crosby, etc. This is as important in the collection of James as JT.

When people use the term "singer/songwriter" (often modified by the word "sensitive") in praise or in criticism, they're thinking of James Taylor. In the early '70s, when he appeared with his introspective songs, acoustic guitar, and calm, understated singing style, he mirrored a generation's emotional...
